Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I got chased by a hobo. Was going really slowly down a closed street (trolleys/pedestrians/bikes only) just checking out everyone who was eating outside at all the restaurants, and this homeless guy leaning against a tree goes, "Nice bike," and starts walking behind me. I go "Thanks" and he says, "I said 'nice bike'" again and gets closer so I crank out of the saddle a couple times and he's running behind me for like a block. Don't know what he had in mind, but he probably would have hobo-bar'd my drops...

Last night I hit 58kph on a downhill and spun up to 170rpm. I'm stoked on that.

On my usual 10 mi night ride through Alhambra, CA along Main St. and park myself at this plaza garden area that faces Main St 'cause I hear some loud house music pumping. I'm like "Oh? What's this? Breakdancing?" So I take a look and was let down. It was just a bunch of highschool kids doing some techno rave dancing crap. I stuck around for a few minutes 'cause it was amusing. Props to them for being able to not give a **** about dancing like crap in public.

I rode down by the waterfront tonight for the first time. No one was down there hardly..I was practicing my skidding. No able to lay like a 15 foot patch. Pretty good considering this is the second time I have attempted skidding at a higher speed. It was a nice night too.

I got my spin on after I lowered my gearing to 70 gi and put on 165mm cranks last night. I was ridding home from school and was pulled some 4 miles by a bus's draft going(I'm guessing because it was slower than the other traffic) 30mph. There was a bus behind me and a bus in front of me and I had to just spin my ass off but it felt so cool. The driver behind me even gave me a thumbs up when I pulled off to make a left turn. It was kind of scary though, being stuck between two buses and all.

it was nice, makes me miss my busted road bike

local rural road, ~8am on a sunny sunday morning, all by myself. i was passing between two recently plowed under fields when a bajillion sparrows suddenly erupted out of the brush...

i hadn't seen them *at all* (as they were wearing perfect camo for the location), and suddenly they were everywhere around me and moving along the road with me (at 20mph). i was completely enveloped. a swipe of the hand would have taken out several, they were that thick and that close.

they traveled with me for maybe 15-20sec before veering left into the field. as i was looking around and realizing how cool this was, i noticed one in particular about five feet off my right shoulder flying in precise formation with me. i kept glancing over at him, marveling at his composure...and he kept glancing over at me, probably thinking 'that's the biggest damn sparrow i ever saw'.

brief as it was, i was honored to be part of the flock...
