How to ride a fixed gear without sweating profusely?

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Anyway, bottom line... just don't ride so hard and you wont sweat as much, i always take it easy on the way into work, then push hard on the way home, it works out just grand for me.
I was going to say something similar.... but his sig says he's dyslexic... so I refrained.

However, I've taken to riding to work with an extra T-shirt so I can change there and be fresh.

thanks brandon I got what I wanted

as always Ken Cox drops in with the science behind it

My real advice is bring a clean shirt to work in your bag and change when you get, there a small towel helps too one of those small microfiber ones or a shamwow!.
Also pack a can of axe or whatever flavour body spray you prefer coupled with a spare stick of antiperspirant IMO the gel type just make a damn mess when it get jumbled so go solid YMMV.

that is how I generally do it and I ride year round with summer temps topping 120 on the black top some days.

You can coast on freewheel bikes, during which time you aren't doing any work and would presumably be sweating less.

On fixed gear bikes you are always doing work, and thus are more likely to sweat given the same distance traveled.

Cadence.

The same reason we write about hills and knees and fixed gear bikes.

An acquaintance at work said he would ride bikes, except he didn't like arriving at work all sweaty, even though I never come to work "all sweaty."

And, what doesn't this have to do with fixed gears?

I only have fixed gear bikes, and so if I write about bikes and sweating I can only write from experience about fixed gear bikes and sweating.

The possibility exists that the OP is just one of those people, like myself, who sweats a lot regardless of fitness/activity level.
I can barely walk outside from one end of our building to the other without needing to dab my brow with a paper towel. It's hot (for Seattle) today and I'm going to look like somebody tossed me in a pool by the time I finish my 20 mile commute home.

yup I am one of those guys too... I have to press my helmet down on my head to ring out the pad every 5 miles to keep sweat out of my eyes.

Have you tried the Halo headbands yet? They used to be pretty uncomfortable a couple years ago when they came out, but the new design is good. It's essentially just a flat silicone bead (like the leg gripper on shorts) on the front inside of a headband or helmet liner, keeping sweat from running down your face and channeling it back toward your temples.

I started packing a fresh shirt for when I do a short run in the park and then go to work. You can get some pretty nifty, really breathable shirts made of wicking fibers and the like to make your ride there pretty bearable. I'm definitely a sweat bomb just waiting to go off. Oddly enough backpacks don't really help with keeping you dry.

Babe Ruth (bicycle riding expert) put a cabbage leaf under his hat during games in hot weather. He changed it out every other inning.

Give it a shot....

Wear clothes that ventilates and breathes more. Cotton is very absorbent but bad at wicking away sweat so it just stays soaked. Maybe wear a performance wicking shirt like a workout shirt and change when you get to the party.

They also make casual shirts that have side vents and quick drying fabric at camping supply stores like REI or EMS.

If you're wearing a backpack or messenger bag, a switch to rack or a basket would cut out the swampback.
