Aesthetically pleasing helmet

Are there helmets available that do not look like a ufo? Thanks.

well what kind of helmet are you looking for? something along the lines of a pro-tec or a more road helmet? personally i think people on a fixed with a bmx helmet look like idiots, but thats just me. i also find the majority of road helmets to be a lot more comfortable and breathable than other helmets, which should be the deciding factor. the Ionos is definitely my helmet of choice

I looooooooooooooooooooooooove my Uvex Boss Race. It also helps that I got it on bonktown for a song.

The pic doesn't really show the finish, it's a teeny tiny checker pattern.

Getting a helmet you find aesthetically pleasing is worth all the money you can afford to throw around. A cheap and ugly helmet you hate wearing will protect you just as well, but you'll leave it home every time you're "just going down the street".

I also think that trying to look "cool" by wearing a bmx or skate helmet on a fixed gear bike just makes you look like a dork that is trying to look "cool." Road helmets are lightweight, better ventilated and more comfortable. They may look more ufo-y, but it's function that drives the design.

I sport one of these:

except in white/gray/yellow

PS thank you for choosing to wear a helmet.

Out of all the helmets I've looked at, I like my Limar 550 best. It fits right, looks good and the price was right too.

I wear one of these http://www.bernunlimited.com/2008/baker.html in gray. The Watts is similar but ventilated. They sell a version that meets road safety standards.

Ladies love the afro-helmet.

robotkiller 07-25-09 07:36 PM

I use the Specialized Decibel in black. I am a big proponent of helmets and strongly encourage you to wear one. But know this -- you will never look cool wearing one, so just give it up now.

lightweight, vented helmets > skate helmets (except for in the winter, snow).

that said, I like the bell furio and specialized echelon.

I think lots of road helmets are pretty badass. But then I'm probably the only one who thinks so...

if by "do not look like a ufo" you mean "doesn't have lots of air vents to keep you head cool" then yes, get yourself a bmx/skater helmet and enjoy sweating all over yourself.

I use the Bern Brentwood and I like it so far

It's comfy, pretty well ventilated, and I like the feel of something solid wrapping my head (as opposed to an amazing feat of ventilated architecture spread out to catch the breeze). Whatever works for you, as long as you wear one.

I personally like bell because for a sub $100 helmet they have a wide selection of styles and are quite comfortable

LoRoK 07-25-09 11:29 PM

^ Sure do see a lot of those in European pelotons. Too bad they aren't legal/distributed in the states. I still found a pretty good deal (including overseas shipping) for a Catlike Sakana. Cool looking, but not the best fitting helmet I've ever had (my dome is oval and narrow, helmet is round and wide). Next year I'll be going back to Bell.

I do too

I use a Giro Semi. Full protection for your actual head, sits low and looks good. The visor is a surprising plus in even heavier rain. Bern stuff is tasty. Buy a Burn with the winter muffs and 8-trak headphones and you'll be good for everything from skiing/snowboarding to road and park riding. Back Country has them on sale right now so if they have your size you can sneak into one for around $50 with the headphones. Although, if you want music without the cold weather flaps you'll need to purchase that separately.

same here.

BMX/skate style helmets are a hot mess, especially on a road style bike.

like putting mud tires on a sports car.

I've got some bern helmet which I bought in the middle of winter, wa great for then. now its as hot as hell :P I want a catlike for the summer, but do they meet US safety standards? Safety is really the main point here.

psirue 07-26-09 10:30 AM

catlike does not meet CPSC standards (I believe it failed the "spike through helmet" test), but that does not mean they are not safe. they're too expensive anyways -- who wants to spend $250 on a disposable product that may or may not fit?
