Handlebars/Stem Stolen

So last night my handlebars/stem were stolen. I was... upset to say the least. (BTW, if you live in Davis, keep an eye out for a set of Nitto RB-021s for me :P)

Anyway, is there anyway to prevent this from happening in the future? I thought I remembered seeing something on the site, but doing a quick search, I couldn't find it.

Did they cut your brake cables or what?

Ha. Ha.

1rd post is haterade.

There have been a lot of threads on this. Solder some crap in the nut or superglue a bb in there.

hot glue and a ball bearing
or just stop leaving your nice bike locked up over night

keep an ye on craigslist and check the sketchy bike shops in sac like bike builders and that one in west sac

What do you do when you need to get it out?

Yo! 07-31-09 03:11 PM

I'd say heat up the tip of a nail or something and dig it out. Can't be too complicated.

You can also use hot wax and a BB or 2. Or another alternative is to use torx bolts or something other than allenheads.

consider investing in one of those awesome pursuit bikes with handlebars that are attached directly to the fork

Was it stolen in Davis/on campus?

A regular cap takes a hex bolt. You can better tell how this thing seems to work here.

I posted the incorrect link. That's just a replacement top cap. ifthe21st posted the correct link that shows the full system. basically, a key is needed to loosen the bolt.

most likely someone is enjoying your bars right now.
check local Craigslist and or fixed gear forum too.

Thanks for the advice. The locking cap was what I was originally thinking of, but I forgot it was for threadless.

Stolen from in front of my apartment in the Colleges

birthdaytronic 08-04-09 12:24 AM

That's too bad - is your bike the red one nearby the mailboxes? I always see that one when I bike by on the way to my place.

seajaye 08-04-09 01:13 AM

most obvious: keep your bike inside overnight.

or, of course: put a brake on your next set of bars if you can suck up the loss in street cred.

there's also: make a sacrifice and run a cheapo stem and bars so if/when they do get stolen again, you won't be that upset.

i've never tried the glue & BB for my threaded stems, but i was definitely considering it before i put a brake back on.

RB-021's are cheap bars! unless they were anoodized, which for some reason nearly doubles the price!

Or hairdryer and a magnet.

Ahh man that sucks to hear. I got my whole bike stolen over by the MU during finals week.

There's really not much you can do except not ride/park your nice bike at night; especially on campus. If your bike is exposed at all, no matter how locked up it is, it will be a target for parts harvesting.

It's unfortunate that Davis has become such a hot spot for bike thievery.

I had(have) a brake. This was my first fixie and is a conversion, and I don't really care about street cred so left the front brake on (plus I wasn't sure how I'd do without it in the bike circles)
