I wave smile and give people the raspberry most of the time just to have fun when they snub me I ride off
I stop to help folks fix flats daily just yesterday this guy had a flat a block from my house I saw him I went home grabbed my floor pump and went back to say hey lemme give you a hand you just tell the people you help to keep it up its nice when people care I may be an ******* but if you are broke down or wrecked out I will stop to help if I cross paths with you I guess that was off topic but you have to stay positive it is tough |

i'm not sure. It's funny how fixed gear riders are quick to play the victim. everyone is against us apparently because we ride a slightly different style of bicycle.
btw I thought i was new to this, why the hell are there so many 09 join dates? anything older than 08 seems almost nonexistent |

that or they're just *******s. who knows |
Maybe it's because you come off sounding like you're some oversensitive dude with hurt feelings because some people rejected you. The attitude you project will dictate what response you get back from people. Go back to Jersey.

So I guess I just needed to vent or something, but it just seems kinda pointless for fixed gear riders to hate on each other. Like I catch grief because my bike right now is a Specialized Langster Boston edition. The main thing is some people will hate on it because it's a factory assembled bike and it came hooked up right out of the shop. Ok, I get it, my bike isn't some Frankenbike that I built from the ground up, or some company that's "underground" or whatever like Charge or Iro or whatever. But that doesn't mean I don't love riding my fixie.

I didn't start this thread to be like "boo hoo look at me, I'm an overly sensitive rider wah wah...", I was simply stating that there's no need to hate on each other. I've only been riding for a little over a year now, and started to really get into it as of late, but the more and more I get into it, the more I see why the term "bike snob" came about and why someone said they're tired of the "scene" or "culture". It's the same with skateboarding, I've been skating for 13 years now and it's the same there, people always are hating on everyone else for some nonsensical reason, when the fact of the matter is we're all doing the same thing. You just come to ignore it and not let it get to you, I just thought the cycling community would be a little more tight knit, but I guess I was wrong. It's just a shame, that's all I guess I was really trying to say. It's pathetic how someone can't just do something because they like it these days because you're always going to have your handful of ****** bags there to bring them down and judge, when in reality, they're the real problem.
|
I started skating in the 70's and there was no hating going on for quite some time...it was a soul thing. Same for the punk scene, and then messengers. Seems subcultures are very welcoming when still subcultures, but not so much when threatened with being mainstreamed. Once mainstreamed however then we enter the waters muddied by those that jumped on after vs those already in and those that seemingly have always been there.
The only hate I have is for those that rip through town with no skills to back up their maneuvers in traffic. Almost getting wiped out by someone doing a no-look lane carve despite being told to keep an eye out will get you removed from the road in a most forceful way. If you have the skills great, if not... for pity's sake...learn. |
The only bad vibes I've gotten riding fixed have come from roadies. The first dismissive scoff by a ****** made me mad, but now I just chuckle. I always nod or wave to anyone on a bike. I try not to get hung up on other people's hangups. It takes all kinds. I've watched people this past year or two "get into the fixie scene" and basically become like one person, same clothes, same music, same attitude. I try to keep my riding to myself for that reason. I'm not looking for friends or any kind of 'scene'. I just want to enjoy my bike, be myself, and ride fast. word. Anyone that shows hate towards bikers isn't worth the trouble of being offended by.

Well I got into this big debate with this bike snob at work one day about how the geometry on a fixed gear and track bike are different and you can't ride velodrome on a fixed gear because it's not a track bike and blah blah blah, so I just call it that now. Didn't mean to insult you or whatever, my bad.
Fixed gear, to me, is any bike that has a fixed gear drive train. A track bike or a "fixie" can be a fixed gear bike. Fixie is a bike not origionally purposed to be a fixed gear that has been "fixed" according to some people. Hence the term "fixie." The term fixie just has a bad connotation to me. When I hear someone say "ooooh, you ride a fixie," I immediately feel as though I've been stereotyped to be a deuschey hipster. Just my .02 on the terms. |

this thread ****ing sucks.
|
i HATE fixed riders. they're so elitist with their silly expensive bikes and their damn "colourways."
i swear, they suck. and it's not bad to hate on them either because they're not oppressed in any way. |
|
to the OP, they only hate you because anyone that rides a lancaster, especially one of the
"limited" ones is automatically a ******. It's in the owners manual for the bike, look it up. |
When I'm all kitted out riding my road bike fixed gear riders pretend I don't exist. When I'm riding my fixed gear the roadies don't give me a nod. And people wonder why I don't like to ride with other people.
|
>These are also the people that are decked out in spandex and when you pass them they get all mad and you hear them shift gears and try to catch up with you. <
This explains all we need to know about you. |

Things can change. While it's fun to poke fun at each other - you know, what make/model of frame, wheelsets, whatever it certainly is no fun when you are intentionally snubbed. I wave to every rider I see. I don't care what they are riding. If you take the same route regularly you'll notice people start to wave back Any attitude is infectious. Wave enough and people will begin to wave back. Be kind and people will remember you were kind and some will even be kind to someone else. It's the long game.
Some things people bring on themselves when they play into stereotypes. For example, I don't bat an eyelash when I see some young guy covered in tats and crap pierced into his face - look anyway you like - but there are plenty in my generation who simply will not abide such appearances. Don't complain - you got exactly what you wanted. Same goes for people who decide to behave like idiots on their bikes because they think it's cool. Need a reference? Watch any video of fixed gear riders in public. Again, don't whine - you're getting exactly what you want. Want people to treat you well? First, behave well. That's on and off the bike. I have yet to have anyone treat me negatively because of the type of bicycle I ride and any questions I've gotten are all good natured or questions of genuine curiosity. How can that be? I live in a major city. My ass is in a saddle every single day of my life (well, for all intents and purposes). I ride to commute, shop, general travel and for the joy of riding. I'm never mistreated. Ever. Of course I'm not counting how vehicles behave. I mean person to person. While ass holes exist it is my opinion that 99% of the negativity people claim to experience is either outright contrived (being mistreated is so hip) or brought on by the way you behave. Stop lying and/or behave in a manner that wouldn't make your mother wince and you will cease to pretend to be mistreated/truly be mistreated by 99.9% of the population. It's all up to you. Your call. It's not the rest of the world - it's you. (Oh, just to be clear, I'm also a "you".) |
Cool story bro.
