i'd do 48/17.

or 48/16 if you're running a brake.

moderate hills in NC and ride 48x16. Works for me.

I favor somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 gear inches. I prefer to spin as much as possible.

In the flatwoods of fla, I run a 53x17 (82 GI) so as to keep up on group rides. However, I do have a fixed commuer/tourer that's gear as much as 10 GI's lower.

From my observations, its seems that 74 GI is a very common gearing, so get a 17t and 16t cog and experiment.

48x18 is my jam. Not too spinny, not too easy and not too hard.

Just switched to 51x18 today, so I can climb up more hills.

I picked up my bike with a 48x19. Love how it feels, hate how it looks. Also, my fitness has improved a lot since I got it, so when I get back from my honeymoon it's gonna be waiting for me with a new 16T cog. No, I don't skid, and now I've got a better excuse for as long as I'm rockin' the 16.

I actually wanted to go to a 17, and called the bike shop over a week ago to say "I want to bring my bike in on Fri, pick it up on Wed, and I want a black 17T cog put on it" and they were like "Just bring it in on Fri, we'll go over what you want, we'll do the work on Mon and it'll be ready on Tue." Great! Go in today and the story is "No, we don't have any 17's in stock. No, we're not really doing much ordering right now - might take a week or two to get one. Here's a nice Dura-Ace 15T, want that?" The dug around and found a 16 for me. WTH, I'll give it a shot. It'll look great if I'm able to push it. If not, it should help me HTFU. :)

my bike came stock with 48x15. it was work because i live in a somewhat hilly and windy city

road makes you lazy coming back to your fixed, but once you get back into the spin, coming fresh off the fixed invigorates your ride on road.

Did a 220km charity ride on my fixed gear in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. 48 x 18 rules.

I love 48x18, I'd rather spin faster than deal with higher grearing from stops and into wind.

Depends on terrain and prefference.

my city is very windy, seems every day there is a huge head wind no matter what direction you are going. but it is also insanely flat, but i think that may be why it is so windy.

48x17t seems to be my sweet spot.

Ive ran 48x18 and like it alot.

I'd probably think it sucks, I live in a pretty flat area and sometimes feel like 48x16 is a bit too low. Depends on the rider though.
