Spacing chainring on chainset

I've got the following chainset for the bike I'm building:

As you can see, it has guards either side of the chainring. To get it properly aligned with the rear sprocket, it could do with being 1-2mm closer to the frame. It's already got the shortest bottom bracket I could find (108mm Italian) and in any case, fitting a shorter BB would see the inside guard fouling the frame.

What would seem to make sense is to remove the inside guard and fit washers between the chainring and the crank, essentially moving the chainring the thickness of the washer closer to the frame. This ought to get the alignment more or less bang-on.

So. Simple solution or stupid and dangerous?
