Tools?
I am building up a fixed gear for the first time and would like some advice on what special tools I will need esp. for headset and bb installation. I am putting a tange threadless headset and a sugino75 bb on a surly steamroller frame.
Thanks in advance. |

Thanks in advance. Not all the tools are required for low key maintenance like this (unless you're tapping and facing the bottom bracket). If you look up the repair help on Park's site, they give you tool list preceding each repair section. |
if you're serious about installing the bb yourself, you'd want to face the bottom bracket shell, and then chase the threads to make sure they're clean before you install it. and you'll also want to face the head tube as well. even if it's a brand new frame, there could still be some imperfections on those two surfaces, and especially in the threads. it's best to take it to a shop for those three things, and then do the rest yourself.

Go out to ebay and order the park advanced tool set. It's around $220. That should cover everything you will need. You may need to buy a few more tools.

Speaking of facing and chasing threads..... in the years of installing headsets and BB's to both new and used frames, I never bothered going through those steps. I've never encountered any problems, during or after installations.
I wonder if some LBS's don't bother doing that as well.... |
bottom bracket tools:
