Want to get a fixed gear bike
 

Mainly to be used on campus. I'm not "that" comfortable with fixed gear bikes (with no free hub) I mean I have ridden in a velodrome and know how one feels but I am concerned about riding one on campus with people walking around. I know many ride fixed gear bikes on the streets. I feel that I might be better off riding a single speed with a free hub rear wheels with brakes, any comments?

Oh btw, I ride mainly ride road bikes.

I would be in a hospital right now if I wasn't on my fixed gear last night. Fixed gears gives you more control and you are more "one" with the bike (cliché) , thus lowering the chance of hitting people on your campus! Just get a front brake and you are good to go :thumb:

navigating through crowds is easier on a fixed gear than a road bike, but if you want a SS then go for it.

I want a fixed gear but i just keep thinking of riding at speeds of 18-20mph and not being able to stop in time. Well the speed doesn't matter, just stopping in time.

First, I must recommend you DO NOT ride any bicycle 18-120 MPH through campus crowds. Actually, you're not doing that anyway. So, either is good. The SS is probably a little less likely to be stolen. Riding a fixed comfortably takes a little practice - a few weeks. If for whatever reason you do not have the time to ride at a slower pace to learn then absolutely go SS. Either way, make sure to have at least a front brake if you go fixed and front/rear if you so SS.

When I'm in heavy foot traffic riding mostly at a walking pace I find it really easy to control my speed through my legs on the fixed gear. And then as far as going 18-20 mph and still being able to stop in time, they make brakes for that.

I mostly ride road bikes, some mtn biking. I got my first fixed gear a month ago, and I find myself commuting on the fixie, and riding it around town. I love the thing. It's been a challenge. It's different. I do have a front brake on it. For the riding I do on that, I've no need to ride 18-20 on it.. I leave any fast rides for the road rides. My fixie is more for fun than anything... it just happens to get me to work, too.
