114 Spokes ???

Man, I saw this dude this weekend riding a SS cruiser downtown - complimented him on the bike, then took another look at it.

Had to ask "How many spokes to you have?"

Whatever the number was, it was over a hundred. He told me it was a good thing that he lived on the first floor, since the bike weighed over 50 pounds!!!

Here I am thinking of getting less spokes and lighter for my front wheel (bomb proof 36 spoke tandem now) and this guy has over 50 per wheel!

I dunno - just kind of shocked me. They were pretty and sparkly spokes too... I think he must have spent about as much time polishing his bike as riding it.

Even though the lowrider bikes are 180 degrees from my aesthetic sensibility (I'm a cable stop grinder/derailleur hanger remover type) I have to admit a guilty appreciation for them. I think it has to do with recognizing customization as a form of creative personal expression. Give me a tricked up, pimped out, overchromed, hyperdetailed 2,000 spoked lowrider anyday over the standard stock bike that can be had from your typical bike shop. Personality, baby! Plus, aren't they SS?

I've got an old Tandem that needs wheels and I've been thinking of putting a set of 96 spoke (or whatever the almost 100 count ones are) The bike already weighs well over 50 lbs, it's just for fun cruising with me and the wife and well, you just gotta be silly sometimes.
