Question for Krypto Mini owners
I'm looking at buying a Kryptonite Evolution Mini lock, but I'm not sure if it will be big enough for where I'll be locking up. My school uses those wave style bike racks, and the tubing is fairly large on them. Do any of you guys have a mini and lock up to these type of racks?
|
it can be tough, but you can sheldon lock to just about anything pretty easily (lock around object and rear wheel inside rear triangle so you can't pull the wheel out).
|
Time to bust out the ruler, dude. I lock to the wave style racks, around my rear wheel inside the triangle, all the time with no problem. I cut the plastic off mine and the hole is 5.25" x 3.25". Hope that helps.

you can lock it through one side of the chainstay.
it's really hard to lock it up any other way since it's so short. I'd also put a protective wrap of tire inner tubing so it doesn't scratch the frame, if you care about that at all |

might as well lock the rear wheel through the rear triangle, just the chainstay leaves the rear wheel vulnerable.

if you can, that's better, but sometimes there isn't enough room to do it depending on rim depth and tire size.

That's my concern, I have deep section rims and 700x28 tires. I'm not totally sure how big the tubing is on the rack, which is why I'm asking if anybody else has been successful locking up to that style of rack.
a krypto NYFU lock is one size larger if the evo mini doesn't fit. |
"I cut the plastic off mine"
+1. Opens up quite a bit of room. |
the bike racks like that around here have always been a bit too large for me to lock to with a mini, but like everyone said, cutting the plastic off might solve that problem. (I always had other options to lock to, so I never needed to).

I think it'll end up being a really tight squeeze.

I can always lock my bike up pretty easy but never get the wheel locked too.
|
evo mini: 3.25" x 5.5" (8.3cm x 14cm)
NYFU: 3.25" x 6" (8.3cm x 153cm) usually the NYFU gives me just enough squeeze room, while the evo mini fails on some of the bike racks we have here. |
I think I'll get the NY Standard lock, which is 4"x8". That would give me enough room to lock the rear wheel, the seat tube, and plenty of room for the rack. Does anyone know how much this monster weighs?

I had a fahgettaboudit u-lock, and ditched it for the stripped-down mini. The fahgettaboudit is a boat anchor. It weighs a ton! Miserable to carry around. YMMV
|
I am going to try cutting the plastic off of mine too.
I like to be able to lock both the rear wheel and frame at the same time for peace of mind. How did you cut the plastic off anyway? |
What do you guys do about those bike racks that have slots to put just half your wheel in, and the sides of the rack where you can actually lock your bike up are taken? Just lock up somewhere else? I feel really uncomfortable only locking up a wheel outside the rear triangle.
|
If your talking about the same racks I'm thinking of you're actually supposed to put your front wheel over the rack so the horizontal bar is between your downtube and front wheel/fork.
|
get a full sized lock.
|
Dont be a wuss, I have the NYFU which is apparenly the "best" U lock around, in that it can withstand cutting for around 5 minutes, It weighs alot, but I also dont have to worry too much* about my bike (*too much, I am always a little worried, sometimes i wake up in cold sweats, but then i just roll over and give my bike a little caress and tuck her in).
the NYFU is great, if you are locking in a city, it goes around the frame, through the back wheek and tightly around a parking meeter, my favorite locking medium, not many people will cut a parking meeter), though it does weigh a ton, but just dont have access to a lighter one, and you will never know! |

if a smaller u works, its more secure than a bigger u.
