Tape on Spokes??

Some homeless man told me today at starbucks as I was putting electrical tape on my spokes "it will throw off the weight, it'll get whobbly when you're going real fast"

is this true?

dpc1192 08-20-09 05:02 PM

please!

electric tape on spokes throw off weight distribution in wheel?

Scrodzilla 08-20-09 05:09 PM

Why would one put electrical tape on spokes?

dpc1192 08-20-09 05:22 PM

just to add some color hah

Mythbusters (Discovery Channel) debunked the myth that a postage stamp on a helicopter blade would cause a catastrophic imbalance. Similar thing here, I guess.

To be safe, you should probable weigh your tape, and be sure to put equal amounts on opposite spokes.:roflmao2:

j3ffr3y 08-20-09 05:35 PM

spoke cards would probably throw you off more. Plenty of people ride with those no problems.

Tex_Arcana 08-20-09 05:35 PM

You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you.

Probably, have to find out on your own.

dpc1192 08-20-09 05:37 PM

what the hell does that mean will someone just tell me

If you have to ask...

I put a bit of tape on the bottom of my spokes (reflective tape) but got lazy before finishing it so it only goes 1/3rd around the wheel. Haven't noticed any funny stuff up to 37mph going downhill.

AEO 08-20-09 06:03 PM

the joint in the rim is way heavier than the tape, even if you use about 50cm of it.

PedallingATX 08-20-09 06:05 PM

this thread is worthless. why would you ever listen to homeless person about anything? Don't you have your own brain? If a homeless person told you that crack wasn't addictive, would you take his word for it, too? I did and now im ****ed.

Noobert 08-20-09 06:48 PM

I put some electrical tape on my spokes once, and the wheel exploded.

i put electrical tape on my spokes. lets just say i'm no longer living.

Scrodzilla 08-20-09 08:00 PM

I think ianjk was making a point that a little electrical tape wouldn't throw off the balance of a wheel.

$.02

Bros, how quickly you forget.

Also, you have a valve stem. It throws things off a lot too. Putting too much weight on one side would be a problem. It doesn't take much if you are going fast enough, but that's more of a ROLL of electrical tape, not a strip.

Whenever I replace a spoke I usually put a bit of tape around it so I can tell which one is new, and check up on it and see how the tension is. Not sure if that's silly, but so far it hasn't thrown off my balance and hurled me into a curb...

captsven 08-21-09 04:57 AM

Electical tape is OK but definately do NOT use duct tape!

the_don 08-21-09 05:39 AM

What about valves? they weigh more than tape!
