I think people maybe misunderstand what people mean when they are saying skinny jeans. Levi's 511's aren't like skin tight, they are just slim and straight down the leg but they are called skinny jeans. And I would wear girl jeans in a heartbeat over stupid ****ing baggy jeans that were popular in the 90's.

My preferred cut of jeans fit awesome off the bike, but when I'm riding are way too tight around my thighs. Looser fitting shants or shorts are where it's at. In the winter I just wear a base layer underneath so there isn't any exposed skin.

And I wear a 31inch waist so no, it's not because I'm fat that I can't ride in jeans.

I hate riding in jeans too, besides being uncomfortable it also puts a lot of wear on the material which sucks since the jeans are usually the most expensive piece of clothing I wear.

I wear cycling clothes (cycling bibs, jersey, helmet, shoes, socks, Halo sweatband, gloves, Road ID) for cycling. Road, Mountain, Fixed... it's all the same outfit. There's nothing more I hate than to be sweating in street clothes that don't wick moisture or, in the winter, fails at wicking moisture while retaining warmth. Street clothes just suck for riding, plain and simple.

You know, there are tons of "non-cycling" looking clothes out there that work great. Fox makes a great cycling knicker (as well as other companies) and there are synthetic and wool relaxed fitting jerseys that are nice. Cotton soaks up sweat and keeps the skin wet which is horrible in both hot and cold situations.

I don't know why FG/SS folks overcomplicate things. Cotton jeans, shirts and hoodies are horrible for riding, unless you want to adhere to fashion instead of function. Wind resistant and moisture wicking cycling specific clothing is much better that any of that sweat soaking stuff.

If you use your bike as transport and not just for fun/sport/exercise you can't always wear cycling-specific clothes.

Unless you are being paid to do so, a guy wearing clothes that are so tight you can tell what religion he is is disgusting. While I guess what people consider baggy varies I say "loose" fitting jeans are the only thing a man should wear. If you are out for the evening in jeans then this rule can bend gently towards form fitting but NEVER tight. Tight is nasty.

I said in my post, there are a lot of cycling specific clothes that are not lycra tighties. I can understand if you're riding to work, then work/street clothes are your only choice. But most FG/SS folks I see are riding to hang out and scoot along with other FG/SS folks - in this case, it is for fun/sport/exercise/social reasons and casual cycling specific clothing is appropriate. When I see the choice of clothing used in this circumstance, I'm inclined to think that it's more for skinny jean fashion than for actual performance - because cycling clothing outperforms a pair of jeans/t-shirt anyday.

Wear whatever you want, but people discuss jean/t-shirt choice for riding apparel as if it's a practical solution for comfort, performance, etc. Jeans, t-shirt and hoodies suck for riding. They're thick, heavy, retain moisture and are not very wind resistant.

Aside from when you're riding for exercise or competition (when lycra is proper), why not just wear what cycle-commuters have been wearing over a hundred years: pant-leg straps. (They don't have to be the dorky reflective ones. They cost nothing and they readily fit in your pocket or can be wrapped around your seatpost when you don't need them. )

You can wear whatever pants you want, and you virtually eliminate the risk of getting your pants ripped up in the chain.

My perspective on skinny jeans. Gotta admit, I've always had long fit legs and no ass. The only jeans that look decent on me are skinny jeans. Levi's 511 and Matchstick jeans fit me like a perfectly normal pair of jeans. They don't look like skinny jeans on me. Levi's 510's just look a bit skinny. Even if I downsize Levi's 501's they look huge on me, and are like wearing saggy jeans diapers.

When I used to be fat, 501s looked like skinny jeans on me, now I wear 514s (love the way they look). I tried a pair of 511s in my size about a year ago, it looked like I was wearing tights. Oddly enough, the chick at kohls was really digging them, maybe cuz it really accentuates my goodies

Amen. I put on pants once in blue moon. When it gets cold the long socks come out, but i will still wear shorts.
