Peugeot UO-8 BB question...

Peugeot UO-8 (early 70's). removed cottered cranks and BB. French threaded obviously.

Friend had this bottom bracket: Campagnolo 68-SS-120, French (112 mm), Nuovo Record Strada, BB-NR68SS120F.

fixed cup goes on smoothly. lockring cup, however, will spin on about 5 threads deep and then near impossible to get tighter in there. Old BB seems not to have a problem though...

Are these not compatible? Did my BB threads get ****ed up somehow? I'm a fairly naive DIY bike hobbyist, fyi. HELP!

thanks

I used to have a UO-8. Read Sheldon Brown [R.I.P.] who had several peugeots in his day - here's his article on French bikes:

thanks RoyIII, have looked at that page -- my main question is: is this Campy BB compatible with my UO-8, at least theoretically?

heading to a bike shop tomorrow to see what they say...

thx again :)

might just keep the old cups and use the Campy bearings and spindle if it comes down to it.

Theoretically, yes, it should fit. Your BB threads are probably fine, but you may want to check the threads on the BB cup. Grit may be the cause, or it could simply be tolerances.

It should work, but you may have to chase the threads in the shell. This can be problematic, since few shops seem to have French BB taps these days. If you're near NE Wisconsin I could do it.

Depending on which Campy BB set you have, you might run into problems using the old cups with the Campy spindle. Super/Nuovo Record bottom brackets have thick cups with rifling in the spindle hole to help eject grit; the spindle used with these cups is therefore narrower between the races than most others. Older Record and Gran Sport cups are thin and the spindles used with them ought to work for you with the old Peugeot cups.
