What is an adjustable chain stay?
basic, stupid, and probably easy but I just don't know. thanks anyone who helps.

Um...are you talking about a chain tensioner?
|
not something that exists...yet
at least as far as I know. Is this a stealth product promotion thread? |
Hey guys I found this really GREAT new product that gave me six pack abs and increased the size of "that certain part" of the male anatomy :)

I'm not sure this guy on craigslist has an old single speed trek with an "adjustable chain stay"

Black Sheep had one at the recent RMBS.
Similar to this, but much cleaner & nicer looking. It was on a Black Sheep, after all. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3060/...140e5c.jpg?v=0 |

I think he just means it has horizontal dropouts - i.e. the length from the bottom bracket to the rear axle can be 'adjusted' by the length of the dropout slots.

Holy sh*t! An adjustable chainstay...
|
That seems like an absolutely terrible idea. Like seriously one of the worst concepts one could conceive of.

This is a tensioner, which adjusts the chain, behind the horizontal dropouts. Is this what the guy means, perhaps? |
He probably means the bike has sliding drops.
http://cdn.mos.bikeradar.com/images/...hxe-798-75.jpg EDIT: I just looked at the ad and it looks like that frame has verticals. The chain is pretty slack so I'm wagering there's nothing there for tensioning unless he's using an eccentric bottom bracket. |

Bfssfg member and all around winner @ life lyledriver helped make a bike with adjustable stays.
Blog post: http://projekto-b.blogspot.com/2009/...xperience.html http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3420/...d355851d_b.jpg Prototype Naked turnbuckle chain stays, so you can run a disc brake without sliding tabs. Here they are built up http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2459/...ffa62ace_b.jpg Here is the semi-complete bike, getting ready for interbike. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2617/...87b9830f_b.jpg |

By the way, I am looking at their other models, and must say, Black Sheep really has some fresh ideas. At last!!!!!! |
I don't know if I'd trust that little 1/8" bolt to handle the forces a chainstay is subjected to.
|
The two allen bolts on the bigger part of the stay look like they might be a seat post clamp sort of deal.
