Double straps vs cages
I was just wondering what some of the advantages would be to running a double strap instead of a cage. Right now I'm riding steel clips with my GR-9s but I've been seeing straps a lot more and was maybe thinking about getting a set just to try them out. I know that Mash has the SAG collab on their site for 79 bucks and I've heard Toshi doubles are good, not too sure of anything else.
I've just noticed that in some of the videos on the Mash and Charge sites and even a bunch of different fixed gear vids on youtube that a some guys are riding double straps instead of a cage/clip and was just wondering if anyone had any input on their preference and why. Also, I thought you ran the double strap with the clip (just as you would a single), but I've been seeing people with just the double, so it got me a little confused. Thanks. (Sorry if this was long winded and doesn't make too much sense, just woke up)

Huh? You mean pedals with cages and double straps or clipless pedals?
EDIT: Or do you mean double straps without toe clips?

I meant both, I think haha. Let me try to clarify... again. My friend rides double straps without toe clips. But then I saw people riding pedals with toe clips and the double straps. So I was wondering if it's all personal preference, or if you're supposed to use the double straps with toe clips, or just the double strap by itself. Hope that clears it up a bit. I think either way I'm going to order a set, just wanted some input before I shell out some money ya know?

I use double strap with double cages and like them.

The double strap is intended to be used with a toe cage. You sure your friend isn't using Power Grips?

OK, here's how it works:
When you have toe straps, you use toe clips. You use clips and straps when you are using pedals that require/can accept clips and straps. I suppose people could use just straps, but that seems stupid. Using clip/strap pedals without toe clips does not equal clipless. Using clip/strap pedals with just clips is just stupid. Clips and straps are a system meant to go together. Don't use straps without clips.
Clipless pedals are pedal systems that do not require toe clips. Those are the ones that have the cleat on the shoe that locks onto the pedal.

Meant to say double straps. Sorry bout that. And I have seen some gurney straps, but also the doubles by themselves. Thanks for all the input

Has anyone used GR-9s with sag double straps? If so, how do they feel? I'm pretty close to buying them, but I just want to make sure they'll work with the pedals

WOW! Way to articulate!
Clips and straps, even with a single strap, is better than straps and no clips. Doubles distribute the pressure to the top of your foot better and is more common with brakeless setups because of that reason. They also hold your foot in place much better because the pressure is distributed over a bigger area. Sure clipless is much better but not everyone wants to buy another set of shoes or prefers to wear street shoes while riding their bike, nothing wrong with that.

You mean a non-issue, and how is keeping your feet attached to the pedals not a problem?

Well not everyone knows the reason behind straps, or clips even just look at the number of people riding platform pedals on everything from geared road bikes to fixed gear bikes. This is an information forum about bikes, last time I checked anyways, but I can see how with all the asinine threads people can get confused.

No, you should definitely use foot retention. No argument there. I meant that there are clips and straps which work phenomenally well, and for some reason there also exists powergrips, feetbelts, and the rest. I'm just confused by it all.

Choices, what's so wrong with having options? I'm sure you don't like your bike to look like the next guy, maybe you do but the rest of us like having different options. Just cause something works doesn't mean there's no need for improvement, only way to do that is for different designs.
