Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

JcPenny

This may be a late pass but I just saw a JcPenny commercial with a guy walking down a stairwell with his fixed gear on his shoulder. Couldn't find the video and this isn't that interesting but just thought I'd put it out here. That's all.

I hate how Trackbikes are moving towards a "cool trend". Not only are they advertised there but also at AE! I walking in the store and there a a HUGE 15x15 foot poster of a girl on what looked like a Republic Bikes Fixed Gear.

I hope it never grows to the point where you can buy bike parts and Messenger bags at places like PacSun and Zummies...

Whatever gets people into cycling.

We'll see who's left after the fad dies. I'm looking forward to the vast amount of hardly used parts that will be available.

Uh what? You can buy messenger bags anywhere. Hardly a bike-specific accessory.

In any case, this is not a new thing. Any time bikes get popular—any kind of bike—big retailers start selling them. During the bike boom, low quality road bikes were sold everywhere—department stores, hardware stores, lawnmower stores. During the 80s, you could buy cheap mountain bikes anywhere. If the fixie trend grows any larger, expect the same.

At 0:16. There's a reason we shoulder bikes on the right shoulder. I wonder if Mr. Pretty Boy figured out why.

I carry mine on my right shoulder because my right arm is my dominant arm, but I know what you are saying.

I saw this commercial a few times last night. That guy is way too color-coordinated with his bike.

You're forgetting the best part about this bike boom : there's tons of bike parking all of a sudden. I don't see a downside.

I think I'll carry my bike in next time I'm there*. Anyone ever trackstand up an escalator?

* only for Levi's jeans, especially after seeing that video.

Just saw another JcPenny ad with a fixed gear. Alu frame with orange deep v's. Hmmm. Looks like like someone at Levi's knows who is buying their jeans.

i'm certain that denali road bike at walmart should get horizontal dropouts and be sold as a single speed. that cutting road drops and rewelding in a 22.2 middle section to fit grip shifts is ridiculously stupid.

actually, that urine smell is supposed to be "old beachwood" air fragrance smell. Its in the JC Penny handbook. They want all their stores to feel (and smell) similar. Too bad it smells like urine.

Clueless people on bikes isn't exactly safe... I saw some guy on campus that was riding some old road bike w/ risers and pink Ourys brakeless - and he didn't convert it. He just pulled off the shifters and derailleurs, but left the cassette. Want to know how he was braking/stopping? Foot-braking.

I guess the JcPenny’s commercial somewhat worked.
It got people talking about them and watch, the next time you are at the mall you’ll be tempted to go in the store that little voice will be telling you too.

My point is that people seem to be wanting to "look cool," but really don't understand (e.g. it's not just SS, it's fixed which is why people don't run brakes, or at least just a front brake) and will get hurt.
I don't think the fixed gear "culture" or whatever you want to call it needs to be blamed for the injury/deaths of ignorant people.
