Where can I get an affordable, strong 36 spoke rear wheel?

I would like to order one. Or if anyone knows of a good shop in Dallas who could build me one without costing an arm and a leg? This is for function over fashion, I just want a stronger wheel for my big ass.

bikeisland has some affordable, bombproof 36h wheels. don't know if they sell f/r separately, but they won't cost you an arm or a leg for the set, and i've had good experiences w/ them.

I agree. For the price BI is selling sets, you can't go wrong with one of their sets

the wheelbuilding charge for most shops is around $30. The rest is parts, about a dollar a spoke, $30 for a decent rim, $50 for a really good rim, and then whatever hub you like.

Wheelset = arm and leg

Rear wheel = arm OR leg OR half of an arm or half of a leg

Go talk to Fran over at Transit Cycles, 214-219-BIKE.

She'll build you up a burly ass wheel.

Exactly how bigass are we talking about? I'm 235-ish, down from 255. I ride 32h wheels with straight gauge 2.0 spokes and I don't have any problems. One set I built on a pair of 1991 Wolber T410 Alpine rims and an IRO fix/fix high flange hub. My geared bike has a Deore hub to a DT RR1.1 rim in back, and I've used a Mavic Open Pro to Ultegra hub and the original stock wheel was an Alex DA16 to Deore. The DT rim was built up by direct transfer of the old stock spokes/hub without unlacing them, and the wheel is nearly indestructable.

My suggestion if you're in the Clydesdale weight range is to learn how to build and maintain your own wheels. In the long run, you'll save a ton of cash.

255ish, cycling tends to fix this.. my old road commuter was on 32s and I never had an issue but the streets are a lot shadier where I am now so I was just looking to get something stronger just in case.

I just got all of the work on my conversion done over here. Very reasonable prices. They had some of the newer b42's on the wall there, too. I wouldn't think they get much stronger.

They're out of stock of the B43's, but getting more in soon.

I believe they have Deep V's available in a number of colors.

For a strong rear b43, expect to spend $100 for the hoop, $60 for spokes, and anywhere from $50-200 for the hub. You may also need a cog and lockring, so factor that in. Also add in the handbuilding charge.

Spaceballs, are you riding in the monday night mash?

Probably not; the time is just a little too late for me.
