I've got stumpy arms.
I see your point, but for me it's moot. Getting out a little farther is neither practical nor comfortable for me.

i put some super low quality bar ends off an old walmart mtb on to some road drops, and then cut the drops off. Everyone made fun of me for it, but after 9 months I still have the set up for a reason. The bar ends give me a great ducked position for riding into the wind or just putting on the miles. And when on the bar ends, my forarms rest very comfortably on the flat of the bars, taking almost all the pressure off my hands.

Edit: Out of curiosity, though, what about my bike isn't functional? Narrow bars for gridlock? Clipless pedals? A brake?

I use them on my fixed, its like a narrow bullhorn, and if you tilt the barends up slightly they make hill climbing EASY.

I have been considerng trying a flat bar and bar ends on my Madison in place of the present Bullhorns. Last time I was on vacation I rented a flat bar road bike with bar ends and loved the set up.

alright, i am going to put my bar ends on my flatbar tomorrow. my neighborhood is pretty hilly so the leverage would help alot. i'll test it out, and post photos tomorrow!

I'll make you a deal: You can do whatever you want to your bike as long as you post pics. How's that sound?
also, about aerospokes. they are a fine wheel (i mean an OK wheel, not a great wheel). no, they don't improve your aerodynamic-ness. i wouldn't run one. they are heavier than a normal wheel since they're just cast plastic. but many people use them, and they're fine.
i guess the "trendy" thing to do nowadays is to hate people's fashion and looks-based choices and act like you completely disregard fashion, because that's so not cool brah
watch for all hipsters riding around on mud brown surly steamrollers with drops + hoods, a san marco rolls saddle, fenders, everything - making sure their bike looks as un-tarck as possible. it's the next big thing, i guarantee it.

RigHty - it's an old Dela Elementi stem. Looked great but the bolts on it stripped and I've since heard that particular stem model had a problem with stripping.
Someone requested shots of my bar setup. 4 photos attached. Current setup consists of Focale44 bar/stem cut down to 40cm, Portland Design Works grips, what I think were Bontrager bar ends (don't remember at this point), and I think it's a Tektro brake lever.
