Crankset install question...
Building up a decent Peugeot UO-8 frame I found.
Just installed this bottom bracket, which I got for ridiculously cheap: Campagnolo 68-SS-120, French (112 mm), Nuovo Record Strada. Putting on a FSA Vero 170mm crankset I had sitting around. When I place the cranks on the spindle and give a good push, the spindle is still about 2-3mm below the outer level of the crank. Is it OK that this space is there? Or as I tighten the nut on the crank will it bring the spindle fully into the crank, so it is near flush with the outside of the spindle hole? Maybe I should grease up the spindle a bit? Or... does this crankset simply not go very well with this particular BB set-up? Thank you for looking past the discrepancy between the BB quality and the crankset quality and answering this question ;) |
Use proper torque.

how much did you get that bb if you dont mind me asking? im looking around for a french threaded bb for my frame... everything i find on ebay or online ends up being over 200

Amateur here, working out of my tiny bedroom in NYC :)
Thus, no torque wrench. I'm no dummy, I know not to go too hard and warp that aluminum. Anyways, with proper torque, as gauged by me, I am guessing by the nature of your reply this should all work, eh? |
maxmonster -- got it from a pal, he was generous... so, much much less than 200.
check out velo-orange cartridge french BB, a cheaper alternative. actually i have a very very slightly used velo-orange french 103mm BB. if you want it, i will knock $10 off their price new. email me, zachary dot hooker at gmail dot com if you're interested. |
You might want to read up on this subject if you haven't already. Re: BB interfaces.

112 mm? sounds like you might have some chainline problems...
|
Your mixing ISO and JIS tapers.

thanks fuzz2050. that was the issue obviously. after some reading up and some at-home stress testing it looks like i will get away with it. actually switched to a sugino crankset instead of the FSA, still ISO/JIS mismatch but very sturdy.
and yes AidanJ, i was worried about chainline problems but what i have done is make sure to mount my chainring to the INSIDE of the crank (took off the outer), which looks like it will give a decent line. if not im just removing the Campy and using this Velo-Orange 103mm french cartridge BB i have sitting around. thanks everyone :) |
We will be needing pics though.
