Fyxation, anyone?
 

In the cycling industry, small company owners always seem to have a really good vibe about them. You know they’re not in it to get rich, they’re in it to offer cool stuff, and share in the fun of cycling.

At Interbike this year, I ran into Nick, from fyxation. He'is one of those guys. His website currently has a single offering - 700×28 foldable tires, in a wide variety of colors. With Kevlar protection and 120TPI construction, they not only look good, but roll fast. They also offer pinch flat protection and an attractive diamond tread pattern that runs from bead to bead.

Not only are they quality rubber, but when you buy from fyxation, you’re buying from a cyclist, not some giant corporation that has to answer to their shareholders.

So check them out. I’m hoping to put a set on a winter single speed / fixie project myself.

How much faster do these roll than, say, a Rivendell Ruffy Tuffy or a Grand Bois 700x28?

I have no idea, but I can try to find out.

Yeah, those Fyxation tires are pretty nice. I know a dude who has black ones and they're tough. That wrap-around tread pattern is very similar to the Kenda Kontact BMX tire. Good stuff.

50 is pretty standard for a decent tire.

do you really believe these tires are not made in China or Taiwan by the factories/companies that produce everything else in the cycling market? and their description of these clinchers on the website made me scratch my head -- I'm pretty confident the owner of "fyxation" (not to be confused with fyxomatosis) did not produce these himself -- he's only importing them and retailing and using copy on the website that does not make much sense (i.e. "Full wrap-around tread and diamond pattern for sick control and traction" as if this tread makes any difference. what exactly is pinch-flat protection?).

And how exactly do you know they roll fast? Because that's what the product description says? Or did you run tests?

Yeah, Fyxation struck a deal with a company in Taiwan or China to make some tires. So what? He's taking the risk that the green ones won't sell as well as the pink ones or that the entire fixie fixation on style will vector towards polka dot tires, which he doesn't sell.

If you like the tires, buy them. If not, don't.

I could care less where the tires come from -- but it's the brainless parroting of product copy ("these tires are really fast!") and the nonsense about being some innovative independent business that makes people cringe because it's simply not true.

Oh, and the phrase "I could care less" is incorrect unless you actually care somewhat. If you are at your lowest possible level of caring, one should type "I couldn't care less".

For fifty bucks I'd rather have proven flat protection aka armadillo or conti gators or whatever else. My choice between cool colors and changing a flat in the dark and in the rain on the side of a busy road in a bad neigborhood I'd go with the...?? ah f-it. Give me some orange ones.

I should know better than to even bother replying, but I'll go ahead anyway, as my post will actually add something to this thread, unlike yours.

Nowhere did I say that the owner of the company makes them himself, nor did I say where they were made. I merely pointed out that the owner of the company, the guy that gets to put a few bucks in his pocket with each sale, is an individual that rides, just like you. He's not some faceless corporation with shareholders that don't give a s**t about bikes.

What doesn't make sense about the description? The tread runs bead to bead, which probably provides a bit of extra traction at extreme lean angles. And have you never had a pinch flat? Thin sidewalls can be prone to pinch flats, so this tire obviously has a bit of extra meat there, it's not a lightweight racing tire. The description also states that they're 120 TPI. Higher TPI generally indicates a higher quality tire, and lower rolling resistance for better performance.

No one is forcing you to support another cyclist. Go buy from Performance if that makes you happy. It doesn't bother me either way. Again, I'm just posting this because Nick and his brother seemed pretty cool, and they ride. You should at the very least respect that.

The guys at my LBS were trying to sell me on these tires.

I don't like the price or how they're foldable; I like a wire bead. I also feel like these are kind of gimmicky.

And they're not really marketed to the skidding crowd; they try and pitch these to the tricksters for the "ultimate in traction".

I guess there's not a tire out there yet that has focused it's marketing strategy on the freestyle fixed gear group.
