Get a cross-check.

jviking 10-13-09 07:14 PM

?? I looked it up but couldnt find it on mercier's website or on the forums... I'm just confused as to why it costs more than the TT.

TofuPowered 10-13-09 07:17 PM

you float me the cash (approximately 600 dollars) and I'll get a cross check. the difference is that the WT can accept up to 45c tires and the components are a bit different than the normal kilos. i'm probably ordering one as a nasty weather commuter really soon.

jviking 10-13-09 07:19 PM

ahh cool. thanks for the clarification.

jviking 10-13-09 07:20 PM

is it worth the extra $$?

muckymucky 10-13-09 07:21 PM

its BD's equivalence of steamroller i read.

"WT Upgrades from the regular Kilo TT:

Pro-grade Forged Aluminum Sugino Track crankset (130 BCD)
Custom Alex SUB 30mm V-Aero section wheelset - Wheelset alone is worth $350 to $400
Precision Sealed Bearing Hi-flange Hubs
Tektro Road levers + R556 front/rear brake - Valued at $80
Custom paint colors
Gallery of PearlWhite | RevolutionRed Gallery | EmeraldGreen Gallery
Fast rolling, wide and comfortable, Kenda tires"

it depends completely on what you want it for. it has the same geometry as the steamroller but with different tubing. if i had the money, i'd definitely buy the cross check. as it is i'm poor so bikes direct for me. :thumb:

He had also mentioned in these forums that they might be coming out with a internal 5speed WT:

Wish we'd get some confirmation though, as winter is upon us.

Not really a steamroller knockoff apart from good tire clearance. If you want a ride compatible with crummy weather and amenable to racks + fenders, the WT is a good choice. If you're a fair weather, skinny tire rider, TT will do. There are plenty of other good bikes in either of these categories, but these 2 models are among the better deals you'll find.

I have both a Kilo WT and a geared cross check funny enough. Cross check frame wins hands down, obviously. A complete runs close to a grand, however; the frame alone would cost as much as the WT. The WT makes a good winter bike, though, which is exactly what I bought it for. Keeps my Surly out of the salt and grime. If you want to run 700 x 28 or 32 tires with full fenders, it's not a bad buy for $439.

destikon 10-13-09 08:00 PM

^^ Yeah. It makes a good beater p05.

artesc 10-13-09 08:50 PM

i have the Kilo WT and I'm not sure what all the bashing is for.

The frame is actually pretty good, no, really good. As I stated elsewhere, the only really week point of the bike as it comes from BD is the wheelset.

my friend has a steamroller and yes it was nice, but I'm not sure it was that much nicer than the Kilo WT (at least the frame). I really don't think the WT is a P.O.S, just the wheelset is. The stock steamroller comes with fairly low end components as well, they only real difference is the wheelset/hubs. I borrowed my friend's steamroller wheelset and put it on my WT and the ride was instantly comparable to the steamroller. The frame itself is lighter too on the WT.

For 300 less than a steamroller you can the WT, sell the wheels and upgrade (which is what I'm doing....see my thread about a new wheelset) to something fairly nice and have a better ride than the steamroller.
