I've been riding a few different basic tires the past three months or so - Conti Ultra 1000's, Ultra 2000's, Vittoria Zaffiro.
I want to step it up a little and find something not quite bombproof (GatorSkins or Armadillos) but will last well for street riding. Thus, what's everyone running these days? |

i ride vredestein fortezza's on my commuter, and am running continental attack/force on my track only bike until i get my sew up wheels built. i love both tires.

I have been using the ruffy tuffy 700 x28, (actually a 27), with kevlar belt and bead for my daily commuting and light touring. They handle very well.

Currently riding Conti Ultra 2000s front and rear and really like them. Haven't had a flat yet and they seem to be holding up to city wear pretty well. Not bombproof, but they don't ride like wood either. A decent compromise, I think.

I use Michelin Transworld City tires on my street bike. They are amazing in the city especially in wet road conditions. The only problem you might run into is that they are bigger then normal 700 size tires.

panaracer pasela tires with "tourguard" are really good at preventing flats. they're lighter weight than armadillos and gator skins.

I switch between conti 1000's and michelin eryliums. I stick with the cheap tires, because they aren't trying to be lightweight racing tires, and they have some meat on them to handle skidding.

I've pulled out all kinds of things from these tires, chunks of broken glass, shards of metal, rocks and I'm talking pretty big pieces, and I haven't gotten a flat yet from them. I'm using the road Armadillos... I did get a flat from the slick Armadillos I had on my mountain bike, because the treads were different on those. |
I can't recommend Gatorskins. I love regular Contis, but on the same day that I got Gatorskins put on my bike, I got a bloody flat (A large shard of glass punctured a large hole in the tire and I had to toss it). Not only are they not guaranteed for puncture prevention, they also feel sluggish and heavy and slow. It's like riding on leather tires.
I roll over all kinds of crap on my current tires (Conti Ultra 2000 and Vredestein Fortezza) and haven't gotten a flat in 6 months, I think it's because I keep the psi level pretty high (120) and check the tires after rides and pick out all the debris that's imbedded into them. |
I am running Conti Grand Prix 3000s on mine, blue because they look cool against my orange frame. They feel awesome and so far durability is good, but I don't skid so I am less worried about that.

On my Soma Rush I'm running Michelin Carbon and on my C-dale Messenger
I'm running Vittoria Rubino Pro Tech. Both ride nice however I got 2 (TWO) flats in one afternoon of riding on the C-dale |

Any other opinions on the conti attack/force's? they're fairly pricey (compared to my gatorskins) but i'm eating through gatorskin tread pretty quick, and would like something a quicker/less wooden to ride

I like the Vredstein Fortezzas too. They're light enough for performance, but last longer than most racing tires.

I just put on 700x30 Kenda Quicks, which are technically cyclo tires. But they have a pretty shallow tread and are really sticky. My brother uses them on his Redline and he rides on pavement all the time. He has had one flat and it was a pinch that he must have road on for 30 miles before it finally blew.
The only problem with using these tires is that it requires a cyclo or hybrid fork--a normal road fork does not allow enough clearance. Found that one out the hard way:) Leslie |
