eai steel deluxe is what i've settled on. good profile, long wearing, wide range of sizes. they're not drilled or lightened in the larger sizes, but that's a minor quibble honestly.

for what it's worth, it's silent on my bike with mighty compe ring and YBN 747SL chain.

How do you install the cog carrier on the hub? Can it be removed once installed?

Install it the same way you would install a normal cog. When tighenting, you can loosely thread the lockring on just to keep the cog from popping off the carrier off. Same when removing it.

Have you actually tried putting the cogs on backwards? I have that same system on my track bike and the cogs will only go on one way. I suspect I could force them on backwards, but without the bigger hammer mentality there is obviously one way they like to go on.

Yes. They fit on just fine.

Weird. Now I want to get home and try it. I haven't used all of mine but I know the ones I have used go on much better in one orientation.

mihlbach 11-03-09 04:53 PM

OK, just to be sure, I double checked my 17t and 16t cog and they fit on the carrier exactly the same either way, so mine are completely reversible...without question. Weird that yours don't appear to be reversible. How long have you had your Miche cog(s) and carrier? Perhaps they slightly redesigned the cog and/or carrier somewhere along to way.

mihlbach 11-03-09 04:57 PM

Veganeric, are you using 3/32" cogs or 1/8"? Mine are 1/8". Perhaps the 3/32" inch cogs are designed slightly differently so they fit on the same carrier as the 1/8" cog. I've never examined a 3/32" cog so I dunno.

veganeric 11-03-09 05:09 PM

They're 1/8". They look symmetrical but the splined portion of the cog appears to be stamped, which could explain why they fit better one way (slight taper). I've had them about six months.

Thats not a good sign. Mine are about 3 years old.
