hill billy singlespeed conversion

I have a 07 rockhopper. All of the shifting worked okay but it all needed replaced. The bike has over 2k on it. So I thought single speed. Well, I cant get out to my LBS for a couple weeks so in the meantime heres what went down. I took the cables off the derailleur and it defaulted to 8th gear. way too low. so I made some adjustments and got it to default into 6th gear. then I took off the cassette and its an 8spd so the 7th and 8th gear independant. I put the 7th gear on first as a spacer then put the cassette on then put the 8th gear back on since it was what the lockring binded too. Now it defaults in 5th gear. I have shifter and brakes combined into 1 lever. I have extra brake levers but its almost dark and I will fiddle with that tomorrow. anyway moved the index to 1 and 8 then snipped the cables then put it in 3 and 1 so no cable was showing. then the front derailleur is trash so i got my long screw driver and snapped the cage so the chain could slip through. then i removed the 3rd chain chain ring and since I needed that ring as a spacer for the bolts to bite I replaced it with washers. Pics are comming really soon (10 min). its really funny. Now it defaults in the 5th ring which I didnt look to see what it was but its somewhere around 20 I would guess and the front 2nd chainring which is 32. 32 20(ish). Not bad. Im planning on buying a real single speed conversion as soon as I can get to my lbs.

I'm surprised it all needed replaced. That isn't a high mileage bike IMO.

I know. I was kinda mad. the 8th gear is totally chewed out but I could just buy that but everything has worn to my chain so I cant really just replace one. Now I got a 2nd single speed

You could have just mounted the gear levers pointing down so you can't reach them when you're riding. Much less work and still as much single speed as your work.

It only takes 50 cents worth of PVC and a hacksaw to make a cassette into a single speed.

I don't disagree, but look at the thread title.
