Bolt on wheel locks or 5 sided nuts
Does anyone know of any 5 sided wheel nuts or bolt on wheel lock (not quick release) anti-theft systems? It seems that everything out there is to convert quick release wheels to lock nut wheels like pitlock, etc. Normally I would bring an extra lock or a cable lock to attach to my Kryptonite mini, but sometimes its a pain. There has to be something out there...

pitlock makes a security nut for solid axles, but your axle must be 10mm in diameter. I do not know the normal diameter of standard track axles without measuring, however. I suspect they are not commonly that size.
|
I am pretty sure there is no convenient system for solid axle wheels that couldn't be defeated with a pair of locking pliers
|
|
Track axels are 10mm.
|
Pitlocks are designed for vertical drop outs, not horizontals.
|
the pitlock axle nuts would be fine. I am not talking about their security skewers. and, besides, put these on the front wheel, u-lock the rear sheldon style. I dont think both front and back wheels need protection.

10mm diameter. most peoples' axles are long enough to provide the 12mm they need.
Easy way to check, measure it. |
Wow, 100+ for a set. I understand these could end up saving a lot more money (what your wheels are worth) in the end, but I feel like I'd much rather use two U-Locks.

Convenience?
|
These would be ideal, but they are not for use with horizontal dropouts, ie almost any fixed gear.
From Peter White Cycles (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/pitlock.asp): Horizontal Dropouts? I don't recommend a Pitlock rear skewer if your frame has horizontal dropouts. Horizontal dropouts require very high clamping force, otherwise the wheel will slip forward in the right dropout. Pitlocks are designed for vertical dropouts, which do not require high clamping force. The Pitlocks can't produce enough clamping force for a horizontal dropout. Think of them as comparable to aluminum QR skewers, which, as most people now know, can't be used with older bikes having horizontal dropouts. But with vertical dropouts, Pitlocks will hold your wheel quite securely in the frame. Don't worry.
|
Oh, they are not for 10mm solid axels, they are lockable replacements for QR skewers!
Doh! |
HHAHAHA!!!
But these are, I guess you were talking about a different model! http://www.urbanbiketech.com/Pitlock...-p/m10dual.htm Originally designed by Pitlock to protect people's Rohloff planetary gear hubs, this Pitlock M10 locking track nut set can be used with any 10mm diameter solid axle. PITLOCK™ solid axle nuts use the same technology as the regular size locking skewers, however, they are 300% larger and designed to fit 10mm solid axles on road, track and mountain bikes. Because of the size difference, if you decide to use these nuts in conjunction with a PITLOCK™ seatpost or Ahead bolt, you will have to use two different keys. |

The price outweighs the convenience in this case.
QFT But if you do find a good alternative, update post please. |
Will do

Pentanut 5-sided nuts
I just bought a bunch of Pentanut 5-sided nuts from Bryce Fastener. My eBay-special generic track wheels have 10mm-1mm pitch axles, which is standard. But the standard M10 thread has a 1.5 pitch, so I had to specify M10x1mm nuts. I think BMX and Schwinn wheels are 3/8x something, so be sure to check your thread before ordering. Also my LBS (Via in Philly if you want to track them down) had an ancient tamper-proof nut set in 3/8 for about 8 bucks.
I paid ~$6 for each nut and ~$40 for the tool. You only need two nuts per bike, one on the front wheel and one on the back. A little pricey but easier than the Pitlocks. http://www.brycefastener.com/ |
I got these...

Check out these: http://www.quadratec.com/products/97018_300.htm
Some of these could be re-tapped the proper size: http://www.mcmaster.com/#tamper-resistant-nuts/=75s0b9 or http://www.securityfastenersandfixin...y-nuts-16.aspx |
Those quadratech ones look like a nice affordable option.
|
I'm not convinced the Quadratechs are M10x1mm, the 10mm automotive security nuts I found were all 10mx1.25mm pitch. Has anyone successfully used them?
