Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Well, the opposite side of the hub from the chain, will have a thread.

simple.

You don't really need to use the flip flop though, unless you have hills or something. I usually just stick to one gear, strengthen up and go up a notch, strengthen up and go up again.

I don't really understand what you mean by strengthen up and go up a notch. The bike is currently a free wheel and I'd like it to be fixed.

I mean get used to an easy gear (about a month or 2 of daily rides) for example 44t ring front 17t cog on the rear. Then when you feel it's getting easier because you are getting stronger and spinning your legs a lot get a 16t cog and ride for another month or 2 and get used to the higher gear.

Try to ride hard and push yourself everytime you ride, try to take rides at least 30mins long to get your fitness up. Try to sprint your starts as much as possible too.

If you are doing it for fitness, don't get complacent in your rides. also wear dry fit sports clothes, if not lyrca. It makes a difference.

Word, alright. Still, I wanted to try fixed gear and I'm not sure whether or not this already came with a flip flop hub so all I had to do was flip a tire around rather than purchase parts and such. Or perhaps I'm totally off base with this thinking?

No you're right. most bikes come with a flip flop hub which will do freewheel on one side, FG on the other, and they probably only come with one or the other, so if it's a FW, you're looking at having to buy a cog and a lockring to go FG on the other side. Figure about $30. ask your LBS.

Alright, thanks. I don't really know anything about parts or the mechanics of bikes yet but I'm learning!
