The shop tells me that they have mounted a FW on a pair and it works fine
but they recommend 16T or larger for some reason

Anyway; I know some were interested in this - so YES - you can convert to FW

Why pay the premium for the S3X if you're just going to put a freewheel on it?

Because extra wheels cost money, too.

why ride a fixed gear if you want to shift?

everything's becoming so confusing...

Because "you" don't want to coast.

Glad we cleared that up.

Unless you planned on riding fixed some of the time and free some of the time.

Wrong, wrong wrong. That routing is completely standard for bar end shifters (pic). If you want your contributions here to be taken seriously, you should make sure that you know wtf you're talking about before hitting "save", especially on highly critical posts like this. FFS.

Yes. Shame on you for not catering to the aesthetic taste of people who'd prefer a half-dozen zip ties on their frame than a couple braze-ons.

/sarcasm.

I got my SX3 hub in. (Not from bikesdirect.) It came with a 17T cog and spacers for chainline adjustment. The lockring uses a Shimano external BB tool, which is convenient. Seems to be of good quality and well thought out. It'll add about 1.5 lbs over the weight of a comparable SS/Fixed setup, including the shifter and cables. The hub itself is 1200 grams.

What rim and spokes are you using? Let us know how it works out. I'm interested in this hub (for commuting and some offroading on a Rob Roy), but I'm not willing to bite until I read more feedback.

I'm going to look for a 36-hole NOS Mavic rim to match the stock rims on my 72 Lejeune which this will be going on. DT-Rev spokes... basic stuff for this commuter. If I can't find any NOS rims, I'll just get some Open Pros. Looking forward to providing some feedback. Stoked!

I'm not really a fan of the cable routing either, but like BD said, it's an easy thing to fix yourself if you want to.

I'm still on the fence about the whole thing. Believe I'll probably just hang out and watch this thing from a distance before adopting it myself. Still, it looks compelling, and at least we all know it's not vaporware now.

Ok. Since apparently no one else has actually ridden it yet, here's my experieces on my commute in today. I installed it last night, it had been a while since I had set up a SA hub, but it took me about 15 minutes to get the shifting lined up. There IS definately backlash in the hub. Rocking back and forth at a stop light, you will notice it. You also will notice the parasitic efficiency loss in the lower gears. If you have ridden IGH before, you should know what to expect. I did a couple of skids without any problems, but I typically will use my brakes to stop. I'll post again tonight after riding home. My commute home has 350ft of rise in about 10 blocks, so I've been looking forward to this day for a while. More to come...

What's your gear ratio? Are you using the direct drive as your main gear, with two lower gears? Or do you have it set up to have a gear above and below your main gear?

Unfortunately, I couldn't ride home tonight, but will be tomorrow.
Normally I run about 63 inches, 43/18. Since the BD kit comes with a 16t cog, I just threw it on. I think 43/16 works out to 71 or so. If my math is right, that makes my 2nd gear a 56. I'm too lazy to figure up what 3rd would be. Somewhere I saw someone's blog that had a chart with the reductions based off of 1st gear's gear inches. I'm sure I'll play around with it later, but I just wanted to get started. I haven't really had any problems with my 63 gear/inches but after 2 hours of squash, it's not much fun.
