heck yes! s3x wheelset shipping!
Placed my "pre-order" last night for the s3x wheelset from bikeisland.com. Site still said Dec. 15 for a rough estimate for shipping. This morning @ 10:30 Jeff emails to confirm my order and said:
Yes, Dec 15th or sooner. There's a rumor that they will be much, much sooner but I'm not holding my breath. Kindest regards, Jeff @ www.bikeisland.com I get home from work this evening and check my email again. 2 emails w/ Tracking info from Bikeisland. I figure it's just a placeholder kind of thing preparing for when they are shipped. WRONG! "Thanks for your patience. The wheels arrived today! Your wheels will be shipped via UPS. The tracking number is as follows: 1z1w70e8 03 9022***" Sweeeeeeeeet!:thumb::) |
That is exciting. I love it when this type of thing happens

Portland, Maine, eh?
I know you don't know who I am, but you should let me try those things out. |
I'm interested in this hub, but I'd rather build the wheel to my own specs. Anybody know where one can just buy the hub + shifter.
|
I'll be sure to keep ya'll updated.
not_jason, or should i say..jason? once i get them onto a bike i wouldn't mind letting you take a spin. might be a few weeks as i'm still piecing together the bike i want these on. mihlbach. i would've preferred to just buy the hub+shifter and build up to my specs as well but i figure this is a good, relatively cheap way of trying the hub out before building up a nicer wheelset. and who knows when the hub will become available alone i suppose. |
That would be great. I've been extremely tempted to order a set of these, but I'm curious to see how they actually work. Keep us all posted.

Cool! Confirmation its not vaporware... I've been waiting for mine for the better part of a year now!!! :):thumb:

Hmm it's like a shimano nexus hub.... minus the coaster brake and nonfixed - ness.....
|
Indeed, tracking is legit and the wheelset is now set with an arrival date of Monday, so we'll see.

My awesome LBS made a call to one of his suppliers and they said they will have the hubs/shifters in their warehouse by mid Dec also. I put in an order that second. I hope to have my grubby hands on them before the new year.

you can't get it as a hub-only yet. all the first hubs went to manufacturers of whole bikes (BD, Felt, and i believe Raleigh) and since BI works in association with BD, they got some wheel sets too. Word on the street is that by mid-december there should be some "just hubs" available.

what's the point of fixed gear if you have 3 to choose from?

would love to know if these can take the torque of off-road fixing...
and how 'sloppy' they feel. would make my dingle setup obsolete! (hmm... or maybe 6 speed fixed?) |
Pics when it arrives please.

What I want to see is how abrupt the shift from gear to gear is. Each gear is a 33% change, so it seems like its going to slam your legs when it shifts (since there is no freewheel to act as a clutch).

On AW hubs (three speed free), there is a neutral position, not sure if there is one here too. You can also shift while you're stopped.
The hub is threaded (though not for a lockring), so you could theoretically rotafix/loctite your dingle cog on and have... 12 speeds fixed? I was curious about offroading with this as well. currently the dingle is set up for road / town use and then trail. getting to the trail on my fixed off road ratio isn't fun... and riding in the woods with my street / town ratio isn't fun... so i'd have to play with the ratios, probably setting the low for the woods and living with the balance. |

Should be more or less the same as shifting while pedaling a freewheel 3-speed.
I'm stoked about the sex hub and will probably get one eventually. |
I'm so curious about this.
