The "fixed gear tricks are stupid" crowd always counters artistic cycling videos by saying "that's done on a 1x1 gear ratio with special artistic bikes, that doesn't count as FGFS".

It's not that the haters think artistic cycling tricks aren't impressive, they just deny that artistic cycling counts as "FGFS" because they use purpose-built art bikes and not the fixies we ride on the street.



This is an extremely difficult "artistic cycling" trick done on a completely street-worthy bike with a street-worthy gear ratio and no special setup.

I don't see what's so difficult... there's a few guys at the local critical mass riding wheelies just like that past every intersection. All you have to do is play the video in reverse.

Macaframa doesn't really have anything to prove by faking something like this though, and I can pretty much guarantee nobody at your local critical mass was wheelie-ing backwards.

I can't wheelie, nor can I ride backwards. I don't really care that I can't, but I wouldn't not learn it either. At any rate, that's pretty impressive.

That's certainly true, however trick rigouts are getting more and more purpose-built. Weather they'll get to the point of artistic cycles is yet to be seen. All the gusseted heavy duty frames, BMX-style forks, and BMX stems, etc. just serve to make them more specialized.

That said, the video was very very impressive, and he was very smooth, which is my beef with most freestylers.

and the notion that artistic cycling and fgfs is the same thing is just silly appropriation by people with desperate arguments. the tricks, the scene, the people, the level of practice/training, even the bicycles themselves have little in common besides having a fixed-gear drivetrain. that is like saying fruitbooting = disco rollerskate dancing from the 70s because they're both on shoes with wheels.

Thank you for elaborating on the point of this thread.

The argument that:
"Artistic cycling and FGFS arent the same because the bikes / scene is different"
...is rendered moot when pure FGFS dudes start doing artistic cycling tricks on streetworthy bikes.

When guys like the one in the OP video start busting out really impressive stuff in a way that can't be considered anything OTHER THAN FGFS, we no longer NEED to resort to the "desperate" Artistic Cycling=FGFS argument.

Until the FGFS scene can catch up to that, it's not even worthy of mention.

Why do people care what other people do with their bikes? If you think it's fun to wheelie, then wheelie..or backward circle, barspin, etc.......I don't bomb stairs or ride skate parks on my Fixed gear but I'm not gonna tell anyone how to ride their bike. Is it that much cooler to go in a straight line? I mean Shi* I would get bored stiff on my commute if I "couldn't" Whip out a backward circle behind a car at a light, just because someone told me I "shouldn't" for that matter Track bikes are for the "track" so essentially most people on this thread are guilty of the same thing. My last two points are as follows:

1. It's not what you ride, or how you ride, but that you ride that makes you a cyclist. (still can't bring myself to wear matching spandex though)
2. a backward wheelie is sick, no matter how you look at it.

the tricks people pull out on fixed gear bikes aren't dumb as the OP suggests, they are just usually lame and generally unimpressive. The reverse wheelie is difficult I am sure. It just doesn't impress that much after seeing a Danny Mac or similiar Video.

So have your fun, do some tricks, and try not to get hurt if we don't act impressed.
