Hello,

I recently acquired a neat front hub. I was wondering what would be a good choice of rims for it. I usually I don't care much, but this hub looks so nice it deserves some consideration at least.



I was thinking a silver deep rim like CXP33, but I can get Ambrosio's Excellence on discount. I feel the latter is better for riding, but Excellence rims come in black with CNC surfaces. It would probably look odd with this silvery transparent hub.

Well, ... at least you could tell me your dream wheel set up. After all, we all like drooling over your wicked equipments.

IMO that hub reminds me of a new Shimano hub, looks like an aluminum dowel rod with a flange on it. Sorry, Not my style.

I'd like to lace a set of these Velo Orange rims. I put together a wheel using an old Araya 700c rim that looks similar. I love the old polished Al rims and steel rims, but I don't know which hubs will compliment them. I suppose the Dura Ace low flange fits the look

+1, sorry but there are some waaaaaay nicer hubs out there. Even Shimano 105 looks much better imo.

Are you talking about Araya RC-540 Clincher rim? I found a lot of mixed reviews with it. People say it's a standard road rim, but others say rim don't last long or keep tension much.

err, I really don't know. There is nothing on the rim about model except a red sticker that says "Araya 700c". Those Araya RC-540 look similar, but that's not the sticker on my rim, so I can only guess it isn't. It doesn't matter much though. I put the rim on my commuter bike, so if it doesn't last then it's not a big loss. I'd like to reuse the hub(again) but I don't know how much a hub can take. Sun Shine AM-pro, also antique.

That is a sweet ****ing hub! It is a Hershey Racing, probably ti. Hershey made all sorts of awesome stuff in the early 90's MTB scene.

If you like it, keep it and appreciate it beauty and rareness. Otherwise, it would probably fetch a good amount on eBay with a proper listing!

if you are looking for a simple/minimalist rim that will also take a beating- Sun Rims CR-18 in silver would look nice.

I wouldn't sell this hub any time soon. It's so rare and most importantly so cool looking. It makes me feel like riding a big electrical fuse.

I will have to check the Sun Rims CR-18. Polished ones are out of production!?

I also hear about N-13 rims supposedly a bit narrower version. I use 700x23 for front most of the time. Would having 22.5mm external rim width make it strange?

How about Sun Rims Assault rims? ... kinda odd looking but fixie stores around here have em.

... I know you hate it but I gotta ask. How about deeper stuff? I know my LBS has a Alexrims deep-V and has CNC already. I am pretty sure I can conjure up more choices.

Any more says on Araya RC540?

if you want a deep wheel look at the dt 1.2 ive had mine for a week and love them. the reviews are good as well (they are a little heavy though)

DT-Swiss 1.2 right? That looks nice. Pretty close to Rigida DP-18. I can't discount on it though as it is so wicked. Weight isn't much of a concern for me.

May be I ought to stick with boxy stuff. CR-18 seems so s3xy. I probably need to find a local availability. Either way, it's gonna be so much fun.

I'm sure your LBS can order one but I know off the top of my head that Harris and BikePartsUSA stock these rims.

If you do more searching and find a killer price I'm interested as this is the rim I plan to build up my S3X wheelset with. (that is.. once I acquire an S3X hub)

Hey,

I went for a semi-deep rim called Alexrim R475 (ERD 580-ish). I screwed up my calculations and my spokes were too long for 3x. But I didn't feel like waiting so I went ahead with the wretched twisted-spoke pattern. It was a good opportunity to try it out anyway.

It turned out my spokes were just right for the simple double-twist configuration. (twist so you use the same spoke hole as with 3x) It was easy enough for me to try; I really wanted to do the sun-flower pattern though.

Aesthetically, my new front wheel is a little bit disappointing; it's simply odd looking. Suitable for an odd man like myself, I suppose. So hate away.

My understanding is that OpenPros are something of a gold standard. Worth considering. Mine should be here any day.

I don't think the wheel would contort once the spokes settle into place. So I have to watch out for the next few weeks. But after that, it's routine.

Thanks for all for helping out. I am pretty much color-ignorant (not color-blind) so I didn't know what color to choose. Evidently, shiny silver was the way to go.
