Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Track sprinters exert extreme amounts of force on their BBs. Also consider that tracks are not always very smooth, particularly at speed. Kissena is rougher than many roads I ride my track bike on.

I have never used Omnium, so I can't write specifically about their quality, however, the argument that they are fine for pros but too weak for fixie hipsters is nonsense. I think its hillarious when average fixie hipsters think they are so badass they need stronger and higher quality parts than professionals.
When did I ever come across as a fixie hipster saying they were not strong enough for me? I said that the BB didnt last. My experience was that they developed play sooner than they should have. Could have been a faulty piece but if you ask around, I am not the only one that has had trouble with the Ominum's on the street. I admit they are a fine crankset and I would consider using them on a race bike. The difference there is a race bike does not see as much use as most of our street bikes do.

Iive only had bad experiences w/ external bearing cranksets. I've had 2 road bikes w/ them and both of them have had one problem or another. The first oen loosened up on me after only a few months. The second one won't stop squeaking where the rubber gasket is. I grease it up, then some dirt gets in there and it starts squeaking again

Re-hijack: Am I the only one who can't wait to buy a SRAM track crank with BB30? When are fixed gears going to get with the times and start using BB30 bottom bracket shells?

bb30 going to be the new standard, but im not holding my breath for the trickle down to most fixed gears.

you can make one now with a Cannondale Hollowgram or Specialized Fact crankset with a spider change.

Unless BB30 becomes cheaper than square taper, square taper is going to be around a long time. People running 73GI to commute around on aren't going to care about bottom bracket stiffness. At 70GI, doing long group rides and races I don't personally care about what little flex I can feel through the bottom bracket on my left crank either really.
