gotta have bling all silver wheels like mine to stick out. plus the mad skills. but there arent that many people in rva with fgs that actually ride that i know of. i see lots locked up around vcu but few on the streets. the only people i regularly see on the streets on a fg are andy (rides a tk2) and that guy from brohan on his blue steel track bike, ohh and me occasionally

checkthat 05-17-05 07:16 PM

I stand out because I'm pretty much the only courier in town who keeps their bike clean. Not many fixed riders here though, so another way to distinguish me is the "red one."

I'm one of a few fixie riders in the area. It's fun keeping pace with the roadies on club rides.
Many don't notice until we hit the hills and they finally realise that I'm not doing any shifting. :D

Once my health improves I will start doing the club rides again.

sbeatonNJ 05-17-05 07:37 PM

I am one of 3 and only me and one other kid actually ride them. I have yet to see this other kid out on his bike but whenever I see him at the bars he asks if we are still rididng fixed.

I kind of wish there were more but it doesn't matter I kind of like riding by myself. It would be nice if more people were into bikes, outside of doing club rides in pacelines with a heart rate monitor, so maybe we would see some advocacy or some alleycats or other stuff. There is a state senator from our area trying to get a bill passed that offer tax deductions or something per mile biked for utility purposes and no one seems to know or care about it. Fixed or not fixed I wish I lived in a place with a larger cycling community, we have plenty of cyclist and very little community. Whatever

nocoins 05-17-05 08:59 PM

I brought my bike up to jerzee 3 weeks ago to ride around... worst riding experience EVAH! I will stick to my slow moving city traffic over the SUV Suburbs.... Jersey is just not a bike friendly state.... plus, its full of as$H0les. I grew up there, and was (is) one of them.

come to philly and ride!

I don't know that I do stand out...I ride the ONLY fixed gear ross in existance, I think...and i rock yellow bar tape...aside from that, i don't know that I do...

neuron 05-17-05 09:07 PM

i like my bike. classic bar-commuter bike, brakes and other non cool components. :D

Fugazi Dave 05-17-05 09:51 PM

I have my brandless (visibly) Bassofixie that is stealth and Eno and vert-dropout sexy. Also, I am the only fixie rider in Columbia, MO, who knows how to stop.

12XU 05-17-05 10:17 PM

I'm deathly afraid of riding my bike out here in the booming suburbs...soo many bastards trying to run you off the road.

loaf 05-17-05 10:21 PM

I'm the only one I know of with a converted Corso.

Otherwise, I'm just a space monkey.

I understand completely...stand your ground. It works for me.

no one knows what you mean more than me! I had some guy in a white bimmer give me the bird while I was driving and I think I saw that blood vessel in his kneck pop right as he threw up that finger

chimblysweep 05-18-05 07:12 AM

i keep my bike quite simple, but most people pick it out (when parked outside bars) by the hand-knitted merino wool top tube cover.

on my bike, folks pick me out by the pink helmet. i guess they're unusual. who knew?

ch0mb0 05-18-05 08:40 AM

I stick out cuz I got one of these dealies attached to my bike....finally

Oh I'm getin me one of theses, give it give it give it URRRRRRRRRRRRR-whoosh!

Dr. Moto 05-18-05 09:00 AM

I ride mostly up in Hanover County and have never seen any fixed-gear bikes on the road up here. Then again, I sometimes go 30 miles without seeing another bike of any kind.

Wierd Beard 05-18-05 09:03 AM

I try not to be noticed. Not on my bike anyway.... Riding is my escape from everything else I do.

Wimp. For the size and speed of cars:

Though, they might not meet conceal carry laws and could be a bit clumsy in your bag.

dwj444 05-18-05 09:36 AM

That inner-tube wrap is free if you work in a bike shop and do tons of flat fixes . . . under those old tubes is an almost perfect paint-job. Best way to spot my bike is the handlebar-tape -- braided two layers black and white reflective tape. Used to be very bright at night -- now it's kind of worn.

construction workers were amazed by the concept of a flip/flop hub.

Running into parked cars doesn't count.

;)

auroch 05-18-05 10:02 AM

when you were in chicago I always noticed you via the "nextel-innertube-strap" that i always thought
was sketchy & the head phones. oh and you had a cool helmet too.

incidently i don't think i stand out & i prefer that. while everyone in my neighborhood dresses
the part of the dirty messenger or punk kid or whatever I've always been on the casual side
of business-casual and that hasn't changed too much in the last couple of years of being
a giant bike nerd.

i have noticed that if you rock the spandex drivers (esp suburb drivers) give a little more space

yes i was that guy who wore button downs & khakis to the Fireside. and not ironically.

I know of at least three here in the Twin Cities...

TrevorInSoCal 05-18-05 02:26 PM

Where I live, the simple act of riding a bike (fixed or otherwise) for transportation makes me part of a very small minority.

Unlike some of you in more urban areas, when I lock up in front of the grocery store, coffee shop, movie theater, library, bar, etc. my bike is often the *only* one there.

So, yeah, you might say I stand out. It's not necessarily intentional though.

For now, the exceptionally ugly yellow conti Grand Prix 3000 tires are doing a pretty good job. They make me wince looking at the bike, but smile while I'm on it... function over form right? They are going to make a very eye bleeding combination when the I get the yellow candies in combination with the red on my saddle. A friend of mine today informed me that I was going to have no choice but to find some yellow bar tape and just resign myself to it.

delay 05-18-05 03:28 PM

Oh that and unlike all the other fixed riders in central illinois (my friends included) I generally bathe regularly.
