Help with New Build

My Watanabe's coming in tomorrow, but I'm not quite sure what I want to build with it. So far I'm thinking:

Sugino 75/Zen Crankset

Nitto Jaguar seatpost and stem

Nitto B123 track drops

San Marco Concor saddle

Chrome H+son wheels laced to dura-ace hubs
That would be my list if I were going an all "Keirin" build (or maybe just Japanese...)
but I'm also considering campy

Campagnolo record pista crankset, seapost,

Cinelli Stem and drops

Campagnolo Pista wheelset (Way out there; so probably not)
Mavic ellipse? (too modern?)
H+Son/Velocity then? idk
Wheelset suggestions?
Also color schemes? I was thinking all chrome or black for the components and wheels, or a combination,
but I need some suggestions
Here's how it looks:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
The blue decals on a red frame seem a little hard to match
Any help would be great, thanks guys.

jeremyb 12-21-09 09:11 PM

I've always loved the Nitto fillet brazed stem in its high polished glory.

Thanks, but the frame is 1" threaded. That means the beautiful quill stems first!

Fobdot 12-21-09 10:29 PM

Chrome H+ son wheelset with black dura ace hubs!
Stick with that Record pista crankset, real classy looking
Chrome deda velocita pursuit track drops
Blue toshi doubles wont clash with the silver or black but will stand out from the red.
Rx-1 or Custom nuevo pedals
Chrome seatpost and stem.

:)

Am I the only one that thinks it's a little silly to spend $450 on a keirin frame and then not build it up with NJS parts?

Otherwise it's kind of like restoring an old Ferrari and dropping in a Porsche engine.

dayvan cowboy 12-21-09 11:38 PM

super deep rims wouldn't look good on an NJS frame.

maybe a legit track wheelset, but that wouldn't be practical unless you were actually racing.

LoRoK 12-21-09 11:44 PM

^ I agree with the deep rims, don't do it. I don't agree with your mentioning practicality. We're talking about riding a track bike on the street…what does practicality have to do with anything?

spcialzdspksman 12-22-09 12:28 AM

Alright, thanks for the feedback guys. Guess I won't go with the deep rims. Anyone want to suggest some nice looking track wheels:
There's the Campy Pista, Miche Pistard, Mavic Ellipse, American Classic 420s...what else?
I guess I'm a bit OCD but I feel like I should match everything with NJS too, like bigvegan said. Either all NJS or all Campy is my thoughts. More towards the NJS side though.
Anyone want to suggest some colors here?
black: http://pedalroom.com/bike/njs-bridgestone-537
or maybe chrome, or blue

Wth is this?

Build a track bike by consensus? You're just going to end up with risers, aerospokes and look like ever other mash sf kid out there.

stryper 12-22-09 02:45 AM

•I think the deeper the rim on the smaller the frame the better it looks. I would go with the h+son rims, but polished, not chromed. Polished will actually match other sliver parts you go with like stem and cranks, which are also polished aluminum.
•Hubs, something nice. The sweetest are the campy sheriff hubs on ebay right now, NOS. but of course $400. Dura ace are nice, I run them. You could get some miche and drill em in a custom pattern, their cheap enough that you wouldn't die if one got messed up. We all know you want chub hub though.
•I think 75's are overkill for street riding. Get miche cranks or something less expensive but also quality.
•Blue straps would indeed look nice and really pull the logo off the frame, make it stand out more.

And yes bigvegan, your the only one. he spent $450 on a nice track frame, limiting himself to overpriced NJS parts would be lame. Get nice parts, that fit the quality you desire and the overall look of the build you want.

My real recommendation though is to look through the whole 90+ pages of the bike porn thread and find a build you really like that you could adopt as your own.

i
ts not that miche cranks arent quality, but even they are more than needed.

It's kinda like buying street cred.

Yo! 12-22-09 09:50 AM

I think you need to eliminate any idea of campy parts on an Japanese frame; stick with Sugino/Nitto to maintain continuity across the build.
I think deep wheels on Keirin frames look cool if it's being ridden on the street; check out my orange Panasonic, I've got a B43 on the back. This is obviously a personal choice though, IE, I built my classy Open Pros to WI hubs and hated they way they looked on my panasonic. The polished h+son's are super expensive too in terms of what can be had for other super deep rims, but can you imagine how shiny those things would be w silver spokes matched with chrome phils or the like?

You should asses your needs; are you going to be riding in the rain or other crappy conditions? If so, skip open ball stuff and get a Phil or WI bb to work with your SG75's, and get a King gripnut headset and have the headtube/fork crown race reamed to accomodate. I decided to build one of my bikes w all sealed stuff, and another with all open so I have the option, but I honestly prefer riding my sealed bearing bike bc it doesn't require nearly as much maintenance.

Also, have you ever tried the B125's? I think b123 feel a little big and awkward compared to the B125.
Good call on the Concor; that's been my favorite saddle I've used.

I'm...not too worried about overkill after buying a $500 lugged frame with a stamp. Just saying...

Exactly. Unfortunately, arrospokes, risers, barspinzz not for me.

Thanks Yo! I think I'm definitely keeping it Sugino/Nitto now.
The frame came in today, half an hour ago, and god, it's so ****ing sexy! Lugs are amazing and gold sparkle and paint is just awesome!
(maybe pics later...)
Sealed bearings sound like a good idea, but I really want to cut some weight. So probably no phils/ deep v's/ H+Sons. I'm having second thoughts about deep rims, and considering track-specific rims instead.
What rims give a classic look?

Also, is this a good idea?
http://www.madison.co.uk/lib/photos/nm885338.jpg
with chrome/polished everything else.
and probably blue toshis.
http://www.tracksupermarket.com/images/toshiblue.jpg

god, this pricey build is going to take a while to come together.

LoRoK 12-22-09 06:32 PM

Hey, don't give up on Campy stuff altogether. Why not go for the gusto, baby, and pick up some of the super-pimpy NJS Campy stuff?

stryper 12-22-09 06:38 PM

white industries low flange front hubs are great looking polished alu and light weight. only 78g
http://www.prowheelbuilder.com/photo...ed%20front.jpg

And you don't have to compromise deep rims for weight. some suggestions:
Kinlin rims are 30mm deep and 455g.
Niobium 270 rims. 27mm deep and 430g
Dt Swiss rr1.1 21mm deep and 415g.
IRD Cadence rim is 19.5mm deep and 390g

Um, what?

bigvegan 12-22-09 07:14 PM

Wow, there actually WAS Campy NJS stuff a few years ago. If you could find NOS product, that would be awesome.

CAMPAGNOLO was withdrawn from the NJS standard in 2007.

Yea NJS campy stuff is a collector's dream.

The blue concor and toshis are a really cool top off. I did hear from prolly's blog that the new concors weren't up to par with the old ones in terms of quality, which is why I bought a used older model, but I haven't personally handled one. Just FYI.

When you say track specific wheels, are you talking tubular or just a low profile, light weight clincher?

Clincher because tubulars are too much trouble and pricey.
Are Araya and DT Swiss rims any good?

yes, those are both good rims. Personally, I would go w/ a low profile silver rim laced to DA hubs.

Blue toshis are great idea

silver SG75s

track drops/nitto stem

seatpost doesn't matter

pedals are personal preference

i would throw another color on there to distract from the two primary colors. if you keep it all blue and red, it could become an eyesore. Consider getting a white saddle and white bar tape but leaving blue toe straps. I think that would be perfect amount of matchy-matchy w/o becoming ugly. Sweet frame--enjoy!

co-sign. sometimes the difference between 3 and 2 colors on a bike is the difference between urban outfitters bike and pure class.

LoRoK 12-22-09 11:33 PM

More colors is fine, but don't get a white saddle/bartape because that will just get grungy.

spcialzdspksman 12-23-09 12:25 AM

Aiite thanks. 2 colors it is.
Plan on keeping bare chrome bars with track grips anyhow, so might just get a black kashimax saddle to keep it consistent? How do those feel? Are they ball-busters?
or might stick with concor,
so far:

Nitto stem/bars

Sugino 75 crankset

araya laced to dura ace

blue toshis
keep the ideas coming!

Yo! 12-23-09 09:07 AM

I heard the Kashimax is an absolute ass hatchet, especially the narrow NJS ones, and you have to buy a ridiculously expensive NJS post to accommodate it, but any Nitto seatpost is going to be pricey I guess. If you have the extra scratch, some MKS Custom Nuevos would be badass; I just got a pair for xmas on mine and they're super buttery and rebuildable.

You sure you want to run single straps? What clips are you going to use?

You should consider a Devil 101 or Izumi track chain; I think a little gold chain action would be a cool subtle offset agaisnt the red frame. I think they offer those chains in silver too if you hate gold.

You should round out your wheel colors; silver or black DA hubs, silver or black spokes, silver or black hoops; once you've got that figured out, the rest of your selection should fall into place. For some reason I'm seeing a silver wheelset over a black one, especially if you're going to be doing the blue saddle/strap combo.
