Fun project: Anyone have experience with this?
 

So, I have this Origin8 Del Pasado frame just lying here and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. So far I'm thinking about setting it up with 32-35c cross tires, a riser stem, and mustache bars as a single speed.

I'm wondering if anyone has done something like this on a bike with street/track type geometry (74° headtube, 72° seattube). I know this wont be great for Super DH or the like, but for an interesting jaunt around the town, or the occasional off road excursion, I think it might be fun.

Ideas or thoughts?

BTW, by far, this isn't my only bike, nor my only fixed gear frame, but seeing as it is so heavy and bulky, I think doing something different might be fun.

mine was more tarck-y, but i totally agree with you that the Del Pasado frame would make a good fixed-CX bike. solidly built, relaxed geometry, and lots of mounting points for fenders and racks.

Thats a good looking build. Sadly I think these frames look better from far away rather than close up.

What size tire are you using, and would you happen to know the brake reach necessary for a 700c on these bikes?

Im pretty sure I'm going to do this. The clearances are good for a somewhat fat tire, the steering will be a tad bit twitchy off road, but I don't believe detrimentally, and it will be different.

Ha, not to my knowledge. I have mine because I was working a the bike shop at the time and they're cheap as dirt. Who else in town rides them. I think I've seen only one other person.

oh and if you're gona ride where there is hills and rocky trails I suggest put on a brake. Almost died haha.

Very cool. What tires (model and size) are you using? Also, how did you feel it handled on the descents of your trail ride?

I will most likely be going single speed as opposed to fixed, or maybe both, but since I plan on occasional trail riding, I will definitely be installing brakes.

They're Kenda Kwick 700x30c for 20 bucks each! It actually climbs pretty good, no slipping as I mash'd uphill. I also didn't slip on the way down a narrow dirt trail. That's how I almost died (before my brakes lever came in) the tires did good.

I would reconsider your bar choice for off road but besides that it would be really cool. maybe with drops?

Bullhorns are really tough if you do any descents, mustache work much better, but as with any bike where saddle-bar drop is steep, descents are going to be "interesting"

The bullhorns work fine and I wanted a different setup (street fixed has risers and road bike has drops).
I built this offroad setup mainly for the sycamore canyon mountain trails down my street. There aren't and long/steep descents and they work great for climbing.
I also use this setup on dirt bicycle paths.

Considering off road drops, like the On-One Midge bar or the WTB Mountain Road Drop Bar, is how I arrived at mustache bars. Like off road drops I will have to position the bars at saddle height, but I will have the options of both areo-like and wide-grip positions. I figure worst case scenario if I really hate them I can swap them out for Origin8 Gary bars. I'll post pics and ride impressions one I get this baby on the road.
