Stripped cog threads

If the cog loosens and strips out the threads, would that be due to a loose lockring?

cblaster 01-25-10 03:45 PM

wouldn't it? basically, if the threads are stripped the cog and/or lock ring were not on properly...tight, greased, etc.

wait...i assumed you meant that you stripped the threads on your hub, but your title says stripped cog threads. which is it?

Brian 01-25-10 03:51 PM

Well, it's not my hub any more. But it's the threads on the hub for the cog, not the lockring. The guy that bought the wheels wants a partial refund because the stripped the cog off the hub.

He removed my cog/lockring, and noted that it was greased nicely, then installed his cog/lockring. Going down a steep hill, he tried to skid (brakeless) and stripped the hub. I told him that it sounded like the lockring was not tight enough, but he's looking to blame someone other than himself.

His fault upon installation

I'm good with that.

RubberDucks 01-25-10 04:19 PM

wait he noted that your cog and lockring were installed perfectly fine and everything looked fine, then turns around and blames you after he installs his own parts on the hub improperly?

Correct.

Tell him that this is what is known in the bike world as a "learning experience". Better yet, point him toward this thread and I'll do it.

Promise you won't call him a dumbass?

Scrodzilla 01-25-10 04:44 PM

I think you should shoot him. Don't kill him, just teach him a lesson.

roadfix 01-25-10 04:47 PM

99.9% of all stripped threads are due to user error.

I don't know where he lives. But it's a good example of why brakeless is a bad idea, especially with steep hills.

Scrodzilla 01-25-10 04:55 PM

You and I both know you could find him.

When I worked for an insurance company, that's about all I did for many years. Track people down, (uninsured motorists) and make them pay. In return, I got death threats at work and home. Employment has always held a bit of extra adventure for me.

faulty equipment...

Scrodzilla 01-25-10 06:22 PM

The other 0.1% have wheels that Brian sold them...

Leukybear 01-25-10 06:36 PM

Hands down his fault.... he installed it incorrectly by having it too loose. Just tell him the cold hard truth.

lick him on the cheek. then look into his eyes seductively and tell him "I got your refund right here baby". make sure you are pointing at your crotch while you do this. you're going to get rid of him entirely, or end up with a new boyfriend. either way, the stripped hub will no longer be an issue.

Jerk.

Scrodzilla 01-25-10 07:19 PM

Yeah...I did know that. I also recall seeing him on some hunting show with Ted Nugent and they were in Africa.
