On a similar note, it infuriates me that SO many "Fixie specific" shoes can't even be bothered to be able to stick in a 2-bolt cleat. I have had a set of Crank Bros Candies sitting around for 6 months just waiting for the right shoes to come along.

Doing some late night research here... The Nike Tiempos are hideous! The Onitsuka Tigers look pretty good... Now to figure out where to buy them and what size

Edit: all my research on the tiger over the last hour has lead me to the conclusion they will be inadequate for cycling... bummer, back to cruising ebay for vintage touring shoes from the 80s.

My Tigers came from the Journey's in my local mall. Zappos.com has a large selection as well.

There are lots of SPD shoes out there that don't look THAT bad... there is still way fewer toe clip specific rubber soled shoes with sole stiff enough for cycling than there are half way decent looking SPD shoes.

Yeah, there are plenty that are OK, but I've never been the type to wear ok-looking shoes. I guess I bring the problem on myself, but I find it odd that only a couple of companies have thought to disguise SPD shoes as normal shoes. Oh well.

^^ looks cool, but I wouldn't trust it. Looks like the cleat could just rip off any second while pedaling hard or pulling a skid or skip.

Zappos.com is where it's at.

And care to explain why you think the Tigers are inadequate? Just curious.

Because stiff sole is subjective and when I say stiff I mean to grab the shoe with your hands and you cannot flex it.

Ahhhh, ok I missed the stiff sole requirement in the OP. True then, the Tigers wouldn't work out. The sole is nice and flat, but very flexible.

you know, Timberland made a "fixie" shoe so to speak, called the Folsom. Kinda ugly I think, but it does have a "3/4-length forefoot monoflex bike plate" which I assume is a shank. There out of production, but I'm sure someone is selling them online. Here's Bikesnob's write up about them: https://bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com/2009...g-rituals.html

This will not be the case with any shoe other than racing shoes for clips. Even all the spd shoes you can walk around in are still very flexible acording to your definition. Hav you considered the Vans Warner SPD shoes?
If i were you though, i would get GR-9s and Onitsuka Tiger Ultimate 81s or a equally solid sneaker. They are very good for riding but pedal without a suficently broad platform will eventually break them.

ct: The stiffest I've found are the Asics Revolve LE (the LE version has a different sole than the Revolve version). The soles are board-like, much, much stiffer than Sambas. And, the toe box is narrow enough to slide easily into clips, yet still be wide enough for my wide feet. On the downside, the soles are a bit slick as they don't have any tread (they appear to be mat shoes). And, they've been discontinued.

So, my search for the next good riding sneaker continues.

I think you're looking for something that does not exist anymore. the closest you'll find are the chrome shoes.

I really do ride in them. How does it hurt? I commute 5 days a week and have no car. So I do all my traveling by bike in a very hilly Atlanta, and only use my Toms to ride.

Sadly, I think you're right. I'm going to check out the Chrome ones tomorrow, actually. Also, I'm going to play around with some old sneakers and see if I can manufacture a DIY solution.

for good SPD-compatible sneakers, look into:

Bontrager Street shoes
Exustar touring shoes
611 filter shoe
Dromarti shoes
Vittoria 1976 shoes
Vans Warner shoes

Do you use clips and straps? The really thin upper of the Toms are not enough to protect my feet from my clips, because I wear them pretty tight.

Not cheap, but:

Quoc Pham

Dromarti

Unfortunately, I've only seen either one in pictures, so I don't know how stiff the soles are.

I think if u need to pull up it would hurt pretty bad. But then u're on a SS so no pull ups necessary.
