"Campagnolo Record Track Hubset. The most beautiful hubs ever made! 24 hole, never laced, slotted for bladed spokes. The slotting job was done before I got these hubs, and is questionable in some places. I was going to build these for a show bike that I've since sold. Detailed photos for closer inspection here: http://picasaweb.google.com/junkerna...eat=directlink

Price reflects the slotting issue, otherwise these would sell for something closer to $400 because they are rather hard to find unbuilt sets of this model and 24 hole versions are even rarer still. Built correctly, these would still make a show-stopping wheelset indeed!'

Ouch indeed. This is what it looks like when done correctly.

could they be salvaged building with thicker spokes?

TejanoTrackie 01-28-10 02:32 PM

I don't think so. The problem isn't the gage of the spokes, but the proximity of the hole to the edge of the flange. If you drill out the holes for larger tandem spokes, which are 13 gage (2.3mm), the hole gets closer to the flange edge and the larger the hole the greater the distance that is required to prevent the spokes from shearing off the flange. Also, with such a low spoke count, the problem is more severe, since fewer spokes must carry the load.

Possibly... or they could explode at the worst possible moment. I wouldn't risk my life on some iffy hubs.

Plus, those hubs are known for self-destruction without any half-a$$ed modifications.

I've been riding (occasionally) a set of early 70s high flange "drilliumed" campy track hubs with no issues, so far. I believe mine were both factory drilled (schwinn) and correctly sized for standard spokes. The alternate holes are slightly larger, originally intended for tandom use I suppose.
