Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

bent (not talking recombents).

got doored. Front wheel's gone (no biggies; spares). front drops were bent (oh....maybe) 10 degrees starboard from the fork. put 'em in the vice and pulled them straight.

so my question to the creative-solutionists out there (not the consumer-solutionists).... would u trust it? Its steel.

my stubborness in keeping my one-and-only original is struggling against my desire to stay off the pavement.

I wouldn't keep it, but then again, I like my face more than I care if I get labeled as a consumer-solutionist.

yo pal, buddy

take it to a shop that knows what they are doing and have the frame cheked

a) there might be more dents than you think
b) in best case they can cold-set (that's bend) it back to shape

I was just thinking about this - while all original is nice, it's really not safe. It sets you up for what could be the worst kind of solo accident.

A few years ago I faceplanted on a MTB into asphalt. Broke my jaw's joints, pushed it up into my ear canals. Woke up with blood coming out of my eardrums. The doc said it was a miricale I didn't die - I landed right on my chin, which normally ends up fracturing the base of your skull. I still have two chipped teeth and a chunk out of my chin, and one eardrum never grew back. You could be lucky if you hit a curb or pothole and fracture the fork and go over the bars, or you could do what I did, only worse.

It's not a consumerism thing, it's a keeping yourself alive thing.

Buy a new fork. Or a used fork. But don't use that fork.

yeah; was kinda looking for a story like that....i keep thinking of all the bending and abusing our bikes took as kids, and was hoping to hear success stories - or at minimum 'yeah, my bike shop fixes them all the time). In the deepest recesses, i was picturing in my mind scenarios similar to yours.

sorry you lost some chompers and hearing; all-in-all lucky though, i guess.

figure i should be able to scrounge an old fork for a few Hamiltons. Thanks for the input.

"Are you okay"

Moral of the story - don't land on your face

I keep thinking I need to get a full face helmet ever since that night. Do not mix expired Zoloft w/ Jager. It's a VERY bad idea.

Pay heed kiddos - voice of experience here

With depression (diagnosed) and unipolar (like bipolar but without the highs) disorder (still being diagnosed) I am on some cool meds. NEVER drink alchohol when you have anything to do, because it makes alchohol 2-3x more potent. The upside? A six pack lasts MUCH longer ;-)
