Slipping cog/lockring?
OK. So to be clear, two days ago, I finally learned how to skid. Skidded all day until my legs were so sore I coudln't lift them the next day without lots of pain/soreness.
NOW, when i took my bike out to ride off the pain today, I noticed that when I pedaled forward, something felt like it slipped. Almost as if the Chain had broken and the cranks suddenly jerked forward (but the chain didnt break). Pretty much, it slipped and jerked forward, and I was wondering if it had anything to do with the skidding. |
If your lock ring wasn't tight enough, your sprocket could have very well backed out...take a look at it and tighten things up for good measure...

Seems like you did not bother to tighten the cog and lockring when you got the bike. Hopefully your hub did not strip.

Check it every ride, unless you want to trash your hub.

Check for thread damage, make sure to tighten your cog before you put your lock ring on too.

Lock ring issue is real hard for anyone, I think. For one, it's darn scary to do. You are gonna put a lot of power onto that thin ring held on by a tiny notch on it. And at the same time, you can't over-tighten the thing, too. I just make sure I don't get carried away and pound on it with all my weight (160-70 lb). (Which is kinda hard to do for me, also. My Surly lockring is working but deformed now, I am a shumack.)

After working out how to skid, I did about 10 of them when the legs were warm. The day after, my inner thigh muscles were sore for a few days, I think from pulling up so hard on the front leg. I made sure I was alternating legs, so I would get used to each leg being forward.
I think muscle soreness is normal for first timers, as the muscles used to slow down/skid are not used when riding with any kind of free wheel. Especially if one were to go out and do it a lot on the first day. My cheapo lock ring (Dura-Ace cog) loosened up after the first few ride, I wedged the spanner against the seat stay (I don't much care about the paint job) and turned the wheel HARD by hand. I was praying for the little threads not to strip, they didn't, thank god. Now its been a few rides and its still tight. If you feel the slightest cog movement and you know its not chain slack, stop skidding or slowing down quickly till its tightened. Enjoy |
yeah. inner thighs were very sore, so were my quads. But its gone away now. I should be able to get back to riding by Sunday. Even if they arent sore tommrow ill take the day off just to be safe.
Btw, ill tighten the cog/lockring asap while im not riding. |

yeah ive stopped riding for now, and it only slipped like two more times either way. Liiike......I was slowing down during my ride since i was far from home (and the next bus stop), and it slpped backwards.
Pedaled forward, and it slipped back. So otehr than htat, im going to examine it asap. A sub forum would be cool. Is there anything in the DIY about repairing/tightening stuff lol. |

The more times you let it slip the worse the damage will be, If you absolutly need to ride the bike avoid putting any back pressure on the pedals, maybe rotafix your cog if you don't have the tools to do it right |

You could have loose axle lock nuts. You know the corn-nut and stuff. I had them loose on my formula hub before. It was slipping, but the cog-lockring were in tight. ... Check the hub axle, too. Takes a half a min to do it.
