drop bars w/o brake levers
I just fixed my bike, and I'm finding that I used to ride almost entirely with my hands on the brake levers. Now that they're gone, it seems like my hands slip down if I ride with them on the top and my ass gets sore riding on the drops all day.
Any advice, apart from putting bullhorns on? I can't afford those right now and I like how drops look. Thanks. |
Your but hurts because you're on the saddle more. Standing up while pedaling is the soloution. But that's more difficult to do on the drops. I have drops and no brakes, and I tend to keep my hands near the stem.
My 2 cents. |
Find a junker pair of brake levers. Rip the actual lever part off and just use the base/hood portion as dummy levers on your bars. Voila - hand position restored.
|
reverse the road bar and apply hacksaw. Hey presto, bullhorns!
|
I still think the sore a$$ isn't due to hand position, it's due to riding fixed and not standing off the saddle when there are bumps in the road. Hand position probably has little or nothing to do with it...
|
I think you just need to get used to it...
|
I second the idea of sawing off the drops and making your own bullhorns. Mine came out pretty groovy.

raise the height of the bar. Turn the bar a little more upwards or upside down even. Install some rubber Oury grips. Get grippy gloves. build calluses on - you know where :D

What about the saddle, I mean thats were your ass is right. Maby it's time for you to get a brooks.
|
i'm going to second checking your saddle. try changing the angle or fore/aft position.
or you could try raising the bars a bit so you can spend more time in the drops. fsnl sparky |
You still got it wrong - it aint the saddle, it's letting the saddle hit your bum. Put your butt up in the air when you're going over 'rocky' patches of the road.
Yeah. I be omniceint. And DRUNK. |

I was practicing posting over bumps etc. when I was still geared so I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with being in the saddle more - I'm out of it as much now as I was before. It's a basic non-cut away Selle Italia. I just find that when I'm leaning further forward, on the drops, my crotch is pressed onto the saddle harder. Isn't it common knowledge that riding on the drops for a long time is somewhat uncomfortable?
|
Okay, I'm not psychic over long periods of time... Try not riding in the drops.

You could get fixed - then your crotch could handle more pressure!
