Lugged Kilo or Kilo Deluxe Complete Soon?

I read on some thread recently that there may be a lugged version of the kilo coming out soon. Also, that maybe there will be a complete version of the kilo deluxe being released? I am chomping at the bit trying to figure out what I am going to buy, and would really love to know when to expect either of these options. Bikes direct? Anyone else?

why don't you ask Bikes Direct. or do a search and find the post where he said it.

humboldt'sroads 03-03-10 06:52 PM

I just recently got the standard Kilo TT off bikesdirect and am very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the frame. I went with the cheapest one for $350 figuring that I'd be upgrading pretty much every component eventually - and quickly since most of the components it comes with really are pretty bad. Its a nice starting place though and you're riding right away. Got mine last week and so far have replaced the following:

Bars - replaced with Nitto b123 cromo's (heavy, but pretty stiff) with cinelli cork
Pedals - MKS track pedals with soma cages and all city double leather straps
saddle - cheap $20 faux suede thing, have Cardiff Cornwall on the way
Wheels - velocity's on formulas on their way
Cranks, bb, stem and headset are next!

The wheels and crankset the bike comes with are tolerable, the rest of the parts are not (the tires are completely dangerous in wet conditions and the saddle is virtually unrideable). But my bike with just the pedals, bars and seat replaced actually rides really, really smooth and solid, not really any less so than any pista or steamroller I've ridden. I might eventually get the chromed out green one on bike island and sell my frame, but probably not; I'm definitely happy enough!

I hope they don't come out with a lugged version, b/c then i'd have to buy one.... for the right price. Their new 5 speed kilo seems okay, i wish they'd put a freewheel on there.

Do you mean the WT5? It is a freewheel AFAIK. The kilo s3x (3speed) is fixed.

Now all I gotta do is throw down on an extra sick frame and all of a sudden I've got a Kilo back on stock components! Wait, I've not even had my bike for a week....

I would love to clear this up; to the point I can

Kilo TT lugged sample is made and on the way to me
once it gets here, I will take pictures and post

Once I approve the design etc; I'll order and I hope it takes only 4 months to get in
So maybe by July 15th

What colors are most interesting?

Worth an extra $150 to have chrome lugs?

shooting for $300 to $350 on frameset
which would be $450 to $500 with chrome-lugs

I hope to post pictures soon

spaceboy 03-04-10 07:54 PM

No chrome lugs for me. Would like it to be without bottle mounts. For colours, I'd like to get black and a green like this:

Yeah, I don't think anyone would pay $150 extra for chrome lugs.

Any chance of these being threaded and with a normal 27.2mm seatpost? I wish the kilo tt's were offered like that. I'd buy one if they were.

milkcratebasket 03-04-10 08:08 PM

I would be interested in a full chrome lugged kilo.

Dark Navy Blue, Dark greens, Gunmetal Grey, and/ or black would be great colors for the frame. DO NOT WANT chrome lugs. You won't be selling completes?

I think dark green and navy blue are great colors, I also think white/off-white and sky blue are very classic vintagey tones. I do think a more "vintage" palette would be more appealing on this one, rather than some of the bolder colors.

I think chrome lugs are very nice on some frames, but I think at a $150 premium on a $300-$350 frameset it's going to be a tough sell, as that's a 40-50% premium. While you would probably sell plenty on Rivendells at that price, I think it would be tough to move many Kilos like that. I'm not saying it's too much, I just don't think it fits this frame.

I also think this might sell well as a complete. Lots of polished silver, maybe a brown saddle, that sort of thing. If the parts spec is solid, that could be a very competitive $650-$750 complete. While I obviously can't look at your sales numbers (unless you want me to), it seems that the Kilos have reached the recognizability/respect point where a halo model like that could be appealing. Lots of people are buying Kilos and immediately starting to upgrade (see post #3 in this thread), so there's potential to put together a higher-end bike with vintagey styling (which probably wouldn't compete much with the Team Track model despite the similar price point).

I remember when I first saw the Kilos in 2007 and read the opinions on here and in some other places, and things have changed a lot. There is a lot of anticipation for this bike.

I agree that water bottle mounts and cable stops for a rear brake should absolutely be avoided. Vintage-style decals might also enhance the aesthetic compared to the stock Kilo decals.

I would love a frame with chrome lugs but I really can't see myself paying an extra $150 for them. If you do the chromed lugs tho, go with a green similar to that on the cinelli supercorsa pista

spaceboy 03-04-10 08:45 PM

Sky blue would be an awesome colour. I also agree with the 27.2mm seat and the threaded fork is a must. I wouldn't want any decals on the frameset but I think they would be good for the complete.

+100. Also, no fender/rack eyelets/mounts. The cleaner the better. However, a metal head badge would be really cool IMO.

I like this idea
maybe less than the chrome lugs by a lot
and I can tell on Kilo people feel the chrome lug option is too much

{new Motobecane lugged road bikes will come both ways; full paint and painted with chrome lugs at $200 MSRP upcharge}

These sound like great colors
as do Cream and Orange
I will do as many colors as the factory will allow

I will be doing complete bikes as well
Probably Framesets First with Complete Bikes later

bikesdirect_com 03-05-10 07:33 AM

I like Sky Blue

27.2 is seat post size on these frames
no rack mounts; no H2O brazeons
framesets will have no decals except HT logo
bikes will have very few decals

my solution to threaded fork is easy
framesets come with real long streerer tube
buyer picks their choice [ahead or threaded] - just setup as you like

bikes come with aheadset - and lots of spacers
thus easy to convert to traditional for those that prefer

easy to convert an aheadset bike to traditional; not so the other way around

ah cool. Thanks for solving the mystery :)

as much as i like chrome accents, probably not worth $150 to have chrome lugs. Are u still doing the full chrome, or copper version?

Deshi 03-05-10 09:01 AM

$500 for a kilo frame with chrome lugs??? I dont think so.
