pedal straps...reviews?
 

hi! fixed gear newb here, sorry for ignorance in advance....

so im trying to decide on what to get to keep my feet from slipping out of the pedals for my project fixie...cages and straps are an obvious choice, but for some reason im leaning toward more of a foot strap, a la powergrips.

i was wondering if people had experience with these, which ones, if they liked them, pros, cons, etc.

thru a bit of googlin', ive found there are a number of different makes out there, but it seems like a majority of them are made for more of a BMX style pedal. are there ones, like the powergrips but not powergrips, made more for a track pedal?

should i just DIMyself and make one? anyone do this? any links to how-tos?

Everbody's going to pitch Hold Straps; they've got it pretty dialed for that type of foot retention.

My friend tried feet belts and said they blew. Seem pretty easy to make, but like I said, I'd probably just buy the Brooklyn made hold fasts.

holy carp those are expensive. but i guess if they work well....
however im not sure those will work on a track pedal. looks like they only work on a BMX style pedal...

hold fast work best with platform pedals, but can be adapted for almost any kind of pedal. If you're going to run pedals, get cages and straps, in my opinion. If you're going to run platforms, get the hold fasts.

As for straps, get toshis. :D I swear by them.

oh im not totally against cages....just weighing my options, and liked the idea of straps over cages for ease of getting in/out...

Cages/straps are thoughtless once you get used to them.

Although I do have a set MKS Custom Nuevos on one of my bikes and those things are just never gonna be quick to get into.

ALE leather straps are cheap and have held up quite well for me.

Bought some Holdfasts despite the price and really like them. Feel super secure and give you lots of power on the upstroke. Also add a bit more clearance for toe overlap without the cages. Switched from double straps and clips. I run them with $8 plastic Haro Smallblock BMX pedals which I really like. Deep concave, light and big platform without being too wide. I do think they're expensive but well made.

man, for the last time, they're called CLIPS! not cages! cages are a part of the pedal itself. clips are what you affix to the front of a pedal and insert your foot into.

There are two things that have kept me from jumping on the Hold Fast thing.

The Hold Fast straps are about $60 AND you are forced to use BMX pedals.

My setup is your typical track pedal, with Power Grips. Other than needing to be tightened every so often, the power grips do a great job.

ive used cage/straps and belt style foot retention. i thought i would like my belt style straps, but i have getting in to them.
im about to switch back to cage/straps soon.

clipless? you can get a set, of shoes and pedals for about $60 if you look around, pricepoint always has deals.

they are miles better than clips and straps.

+1 for powergrips.

I love clipless but I also like having secure footing when having to walk around somewhere, say the grocery store or something of the sort. Have yet to find a pair of comfortable shoes so I stick to clips and skate shoes...which is a pain in the ass as well....oh well.
