I go for the double whammy. Dreads and a helmet most of the time. Had to get the xl size bern to fit all that hair. Oh yeah, its sweet rasta colors too, stereotypical but fun.
I also use a mid size backpack with tools and lock and all that jazz inside. Depends on where im heading.

helmets are required to pass specific standards, so when looking for one you, look for the most ventilation.
i don't wear a helmet. once i grow a brain, i might decide to protect it.
i commute with a chrome metropolis, which is an awesome bag, but im gonna get an acorn bag for warmer weather (back gets sweaty).

Helmet 95% of the time, hat only probably about 5% of the time, cycling cap and helmet 50/50.

It's good to see a snapshot of what kind of gear people use, and more importantly how it works. I guess I will continue to wear the brain bucket, and will probably empty out my med size Jansport pack and roll that way. Until it gets hot and then I'm sure I will be thinking of cycling caps, and something else instead of a hot backpack. Are messenger bags cooler(as in temps) then packs? I like the idea of how they work, but I don't want to look like a 53 year old hipster. LOL! I do enjoy the SS idea. It makes me work harder, and not be a slacker. Today though against a serious wind and climbing for about 4 miles on a steady incline, I was wishing for maybe one more (lower) gear. Wind BLOWS!

For quick rides I wear hats. For most rides I wear a helmet (giro atmos). For all rides I wear a backpack. I have a camo camelback that is small but holds everything I'll ever need. I also have a larger black incase backpack that is awesome. So many pockets, great padding etc...

Not really. And as an older dude with developing back and shoulder issues I find my backpack distributes weight much better than my messenger bags. That's more important to me than a slightly cooler pack. Also look into a wicking shirt/jersey for your commute.

I only wear helmets when I ride my road bike, which is weird b/c I feel like I ride more aggresively on my city FG bike. But a lot of the road rides around here won't let you ride w/ them unless you have a helmet on, so I've just gotten used to putting a helmet on whenever I adorn myself in spandex.
I carry a backpack on my FG bike to put my u-lock in and whatever else i need. I just ordered a Seagull Medium Black Bag that will be arriving tomorrow, so I'll let you know how that goes.
Once summer hits and the temps are consistently 100+, I am going to invest in a helmet w/ better ventilation.
What is the coolest helmet you guys have found? I'm willing to spend ~$100 if necessary as long as it keeps me riding in these Texas summers...

Helmet. I had enough trouble learning the alphabet the first time around.

Helmet and messing bag every time I ride....lock depends on where I'm going, at work my bike comes inside, if I'm going someplace else at least a cable and shrouded shackle padlock, if I'm visiting Providence or Boston I add a U lock mostly to discourage theives

Your cog is slipping.
I've never found a helmet that will fit over my dreads without being excruciatingly uncomfortable. I have a big ol' head and a lot of damn hair. Besides, I'm a total badass.
