Cant Skid!

For some reason i am finding it impossible to skid, wondering what the technique to it is, and if a front or back brake would make skidding easier.

hairnet 03-14-10 06:01 PM

balls to the stem

but why bother, skidding with a rear brake is effortless.

Seatpost in the mouth.

You guys forgot "a stick to the spokes" thing.

Just stand up and lean forward like climbing up hills; but instead lock your legs. The rest is practice (just like anything else, unfortunately). Just keep trying on a flat surface. I wouldn't do it on wet surface, but some people swears by it. ... Even I learned it eventually after several months, so you ought to be able to pick it up too.

Flash_BeeZy 03-14-10 07:56 PM

just weak!

rdubbz 03-14-10 08:10 PM

bigger cog...

jotog 03-14-10 08:44 PM

I agree with hairnet. Get up on that stem and stop pedaling. It was way outside my comfort zone, but then so was first learning to ride. I recommend a wet road, or a sandy alley...anywhere you've got room to get comfortable without an actual need to stop. Be loose, too, like skiing.

if you have clips, its easy as pooing after mcdonalds
lean forward, push down on you back leg and pull up with your front leg.

i dont recommend throwing your nuts to the stem, i dont think anyone should. from personal experience....

I swear there should be a FAQ with a video about this by now. Anyone care to put one together and I'll add it to the Beginner sticky up top?

This article by Sheldon is quite helpful:

Skip Stop

Lean forward as far as possible, then jam on your front brake as hard as you can. See if that helps.

the_don 03-15-10 02:33 PM

i vote lorok should write the FG techniques FAQ

LoRoK 03-15-10 02:36 PM

Hey, if the 1000s of "Help Me Skid" posts already on here don't contain enough info to help, I figured an aggressive new approach might work.

I think you've got a very sick sense of humor. :notamused:

What's the point, not like anyone checks there first.

So very true.

Nevermind. Carry on.

Like Sheldon says, "You have to really want to do it, you can't be tentative! It's easier when you're going faster."

You have to commit. Also, it helps if your straps are on tight.

evilcryalotmore 03-15-10 04:24 PM

Foot to spoke.

JoaiM3 03-15-10 05:07 PM

Whenever I skid, the pedals are not horizontal. Your front foot should be a bit lower than horizontal. Pull up with front, push down on rear.. easy.

You might hit your ballsack on the stem the first couple of tries.. don't ask me how I know. But you get use to it lol.

johansonyo 03-15-10 06:34 PM

just keep on pedalin'!

AEO 03-15-10 06:45 PM

and don't come crying here when your knees are in pain from trying to perfect your skid/skip stop.

But please feel free to dig up a 3 year old thread on the subject and revive that.
