Is this a good Bike?!?!?!

I was looking at this bike, and after riding freewheel SS for about two years, i was to get into FG. I was looking around on this website, and i came apon this bike. Motobecane, being a big name, i was suprised to see it only at $279.99. I just wanted to run it buy some of you guys, being that i havent been in the SS/FG scene too long.

Heres the link to the bike: https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...cane/track.htm

in before Kilo pitch.

J/k. Many on here seem to swear by the Kilo TT, which is around $350 from bikes direct i believe.

"good" is a relative term. Lets put it this way...its good for $275. Its a decent steel frame with cheap but reliable components.

I can't help but wonder, do you often peruse food forums, and when someone asks whether or not red curry is any good, you respond that they should purchase cous cous instead?

I eagerly await your response, though I'm sure it will include some mention of a Kilo TT.

So wait...

a Moto Track is to red curry as a Kilo is to couscous?

For the price, it is a solid frame, but the components and wheelset aren't too hot IMO. For close to that price BD has another bike or two with better components (kilo tt, winsor clockwork, etc.).

One of the main things that bike doesn't have that a few of the others do is sealed bearing hubs.

You mean cartridge bearings? And that's not a bad thing at all, loose ball hubs just require more attention.

So many people mix sealed bearing and cartridge bearings that I don't even know what they're talking about anymore

Eagerly await no more! I can see you're all business and no attempts at humor shall be made. I made the post because the standard response in this sub-forum for "what cheap bike should I get" is the bike that I shall not mention by name (per your request). Granted, OP's question was not "what bike should I get," but b/c of the retailer and price range, it was quite close.

Hope my answer is satisfactory for the Forum SS. Not as in "single speed."

Meh they have better choices for the price. I have a question though... alot of there bikes say "comes with free brakes". Are they preinstalled/easy to install, most importantly are they usable?

Haha very much so. I was mainly kidding, but sometimes I wonder if some of these forum members secretly have stock in Mercier. Of course, it could just be that it's a great entry level bike at a great price, but that's just too simple...

Agreed. That's why I thought I was being kinda funny w/ my first post ITT. I don't actually own one. Have a good St. Paddy's evening, and I'll take a drink of my beer in your honor for getting me all riled up for nothing.

Not that weight is any indication of quality but my Moto Track 49cm is 18lbs after swapping handlebars/saddle/stem. The rear brake that came with the bike is so ****ty i don't know where to begin, but for $280 shipped, i really can't complain.

I use mine to commute so it takes a bit of a beating. Happy with it so far, nothing's broken yet.

If i had a choice before i may have purchased the Windsor hour, which is the same price. Comes with what appears to be crmo body pedals, whereas the moto track comes with resin body pedals.

I would think that "sealed bearings," when talking about hub, bb, hs bearings means sealed cartridge bearings. Is there such a thing as sealed loose ball cup and cone bearings? Does anybody use cartridge bearings without seals on bicycles? This is an honest question about terminology, I'm not trying to start a controversy.

A high quality cup and cone hub could be deemed superior(depends on the intended use of the hub) when compared a cartrige hub, but cheap cup and cone hubs can wear and become pitted quite quickly even with proper maintinance, that being said a high quailty cup and cone hub like shimano ultegra can last a lifetime if properly maintained.

The nice thing about cartrige hub is if you neglect your hubs you just fire in a new cartrige, whereas loose ball hubs can be permanantly damaged if neglected.

A sealed hub does not mean that it is a cartrige bearing hub. Some Loose ball hubs have seals that either cover the whole cone assembly, or have small lip seals on the cones themselves(which are largely useless IMO).

Yeah, yeah, we all know that.... and we all know a decent set of hubs cost more than the entire bike in question. So it hardly matters....
