Curious, why not flip the stem to get rid of some spacers?

cause it's a surly.
and i honestly like the look of a horizontal stem with more spacers than a positive rise stem with a couple less spacers.
just a preference thing i guess...and i'm not worried about flex in the front end..this thing is built like a tank.

having too many spaers makes you liable to break your steerer tube, though. I forget what the number is, but there is an ideal range of spacers. I don't know if steerer tubes actually ever break in reality, but I know i've read that you shouldn't have more than Xmm of spacers...

You are no more likely to break the steerer tube with a lot of spacers than a quill stem that is raised the same amount, probably less because the steerer tube has a larger section than the stem. Furthermore, the steerer tube on the Surly is steel, whereas a quill stem will be aluminum. The only real impact will be added flexibility, which may actually be a good thing on a touring rig, since it will soften the ride at the bars. Now, if that were a track racing bike that is used on a velodrome, then certainly you'd want the stiffest connection possible with the minimum number of spacers.

The two bikes that compete for my attention. The Nishiki is my daily commuter, heavy and stable. The Trek is my "go fast" century bike. Comfortable ride for the longer distances.

lol
tell that to this guy.
i'd like to meet someone that could ever break a surly steerer tube....a carbon steerer? yes. you can void the warranty on a cervelo by having more than their recommended spacer stack height (like 25mm) but surly's are a little different.

^ just to clarify, that is not my bike. I just wish I had a similar setup. That bike belongs to leej88 in roadie forum

edit: but, yeah, i'm wondering exactly what they changed during that "fitting"
