So metal.

Woah, thats intense.

carleton 03-29-10 11:36 AM

That bike is lugged carbon:

http://corpusfixie.files.wordpress.c...pg?w=456&h=304

A rider crashed and slid down in front of Shelly Evans (USA) who then did a front flip over the aforementioned rider. Shelly came off of the bike and the BMC flew up into the air and back down, that's when it snapped. For those wondering if you can get out of clipless pedals in a pinch. She did. Nowhere to go but down, but she got out of them.

She survived and came back the two days later and did well in the points race.

carleton 03-29-10 11:38 AM

I don't think ANY bike could have survived that crash in ride-able condition, carbon, aluminum, or steel.

Here's the video since that link requires a dl:

So awesome. I mean, she straight up front flipped that thing.

Ska! 03-29-10 12:37 PM

i think its ironic that her jersey says "ouch!" on it.

Flash_BeeZy 03-29-10 08:02 PM

some super glue can fix that ;)

WoundedKnee 03-29-10 08:22 PM

Almost as metal as these guys.

I thought people strapped their feet in while on clipless, or is that only for people with monster quads like hoy

Mostly its sprinters that use a combination of clipless and straps, but most riders don't for other events.

People with monster quads like hoy.

Actually, the risk of unclipping from actually pulling out of the pedal (not from bad twisty form) happens during standing starts and jumps (massive accelerations before a flying 200 or during a match sprint) when guys put out at least 1,500W. Of course world class men can output 2,000 - 2,5000+ watts. The women can crank out over 1,800, which is why they also use them for standing start events, 200s and match sprints.

This event was a scratch race, which has a rolling start (think NASCAR) and the accelerations are relatively subtle like a road race.

Also, as with all track racing, it's has to with power/weight ratio. Shelly Evans is probably 125lbs soaking wet. So, she doesn't produce as many watts as some of the sprinters, but she weighs much less, too. But, she is still relatively easy on the pedals.

PedallingATX 03-29-10 09:55 PM

that is ****ing awesome.

Leukybear 03-29-10 10:59 PM

And they say men treat their stuff like ****.....

Selling that iO all alone with that front portion of the what's left of the frame made me LOL.

I guess you can't do back flips on BMC track machines.

Wait a sec, 2,000 - 25,000 Watts? "Power" is an odd unit to use. Joules per second right? But I really don't understand the nature of the value.

... Is it energy expended on the pedal surface? Then wiki tells me 1N is about one apple (on earth obviously). It's like lifting 2000 apples in a second. ... that shows I shouldn't cheat on Shelly. I mean imagine what she can do with em apples. ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycling_power_meter

"A cycling power meter is a device on a bicycle that allows measuring of the power output of the rider. Most cycling power meters use strain gauges to measure torque applied, and, combined with angular velocity, calculate power."

"Crankset power meters measure the torque applied to both pedals via strain gauges positioned within the crank spider. A calculation of power is derived from the deflection of the strain gauges and pedaling cadence."

Chris Hoy (capable of 2,300+ watts) broke this LOOK KEO MAX pedal:

With one of these:

Tomo_Ishi 03-30-10 03:38 AM

Carl, I dunno you can use wattage as the means compute the (instantaneous) pedal stress at the start-line. It's great for analyzing performance tho. Heehee, that's that for me being an arse.

Anyways, I am super impressed to hear Ms. Evans came out fine and competed few days later well. Man I would be licking my wounds for months. One tough lady. Flesh is stronger than carbon fibre? :)

Is there another instance of this video online? I can't view it in Korea.

Must only be viewable in the US. It's blocked for Canadian IP's too.

I blame it on the Carbon Nano Tubes
