building from scratch kilo tt deluxe
 

53 black. cane creek s2 1" headset. nitto UI-5Gx 70mm stem. nitto rb-018 40cm bullhorn. mks sylvan track pedals with all city double clip and straps. i like the look of the weinmann dp-18 non-machined black with hutchinson equinox. as far as hubs and crank set im lost. i want a strait chainline. i think im going to get the sugino messenger and roll with a 46t-17t. any suggestions input advice???

Define straight,the messenger is a rd2 with a messenger ring(45mm cl with 103 bb and ring on the outside).The closest to staight would be a formula hub with a eai cog(43.5ish).46/17 is a nice gear,i run that gear on one of my bikes with a origin 8 crank(just as nice as the rd2,same cl,half the price).

i dont want to spend that much $ on the sugino 75. what mm does the orgin 8 give you? what else is good out there??

Try wabi or Iro cranks.

Try a nicer frame for those parts. Try an IRO.

First of all, it's gonna be a nice build with all name brand stuff, so why go with Weinmann's? I had dp 18s on my first fixed gear and could not keep my spokes tensioned properly for the life of me and I'm not particularly heavy and don't really get the wheels off the ground too much. I always thought "Weinmann's, Velo's, what's the difference?" I'm now on Velos and sooo much happier.

Also - destikon: why do you say the IRO is a nicer frame? Just curious- I was in the market for a F/G two months ago, and test rode lots of bikes and the IRO I rode felt really clunky and the aesthetics of the frame just didn't really vibe with me. I'm sure they can feel great when built up with nice components, but I am really glad I went with a Kilo after riding the IRO. Just a personal preference, I guess... but frame vs. frame, where would an IRO have the edge?

I don't know. I just don't like bikesdirect.

IRO (Angus & Mark V Pro) uses better tubing for not much more money.

You're also supporting a small American company when buying from Tony (a genuinely awesome individual) instead of some faceless conglomerate corporation.

If I had done a little more homework before buying my Kilo, I'd be riding an IRO instead.

just because the bikesdirect guys (yes, it's like one dude and three employees or was when i bought my frame) are too busy hustling to have a 'yeah i'm so cool' conversation with you doesn't mean they're faceless.

it's not like tony builds these frames. he doesn't. he designs and specifies how he wants them built and how he wants them to look... which is exactly what bikesdirect does, albeit with a little less originality and a little bit more 'f*** independence/money rules all' economy.

bikesdirect has a face. it's just not a "tony" face so deal with it. it's a face that brings you a better price across the ENTIRE spectrum of bicycle lines, not just singlespeeds.

I'd rather ride an IRO any day. but they're not THAT much better for the money. the kilo is a good frame. an angus is nicer but not by much, and it's a set of cranks more money.

i like the proposed build and can vouch for the utility, if not the aesthetic, of the S-2 headset on the kilo. (it looks like s***)

i like SRAM cranks but at a low cost you're really not going to do any better than all city or iro.

honestly, if it were my dollar all over again i wouldn't custom build ANY of these cheap bikes. i'd get the built package deal(iro or bd, whichever) and i'd customize a few things... stem, pedals, saddle, bars if i had to, and whatever else when it breaks or wears.
you get SUCH a huge discount by buying a complete bike and anything but top of the line, it doesn't make sense to not buy a complete bike unless you buy a frame for a good deal(my kilo frameset was 170 shipped back in 07) or you have a very specific need for custom stuff. with the component spec listed, a regular $350 kilo or $500 iro is going to be way better of a bike for the money than the 550 or up you'll spend on a kilo build once you're done with your ebay shopping spree.

the dp18's are heavy sludge. don't get them. get mavic open pros laced to formulas.

Wounded Knee- the andels are the same as the Kazane, which i've been running since 08. they're awesome. the kazane even come in awesome anodized mirror color finshes, with pretty nice rings attached.

basically what i'm saying is that with a surly crosscheck, i can see wanting to custom build. it's a versatile frame and you can build it any number of ways. a kilo? it's good for one thing and one thing only. same with the mark V.

i wouldn't get the messenger crankset. when you factor in the cost of the BB you're getting close to the cost of sram omniums ($175 from bikeisland w/ external BB). if not the SRAM s300 are the next step down from omniums (130 bcd instead of 144, chainring on the inside of the spider) but still a much better crankset for the money (~$100 w/BB) than the messengers. also sugino messengers scream tarck.

speaking of tarck... don't get dp18's. their hideous and heavy. the kilo deluxe is a classic looking frame and would be better suited to some box section rims. you can get an open pro to formula wheelset for $209 here: http://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com...d&productId=59. if that's more than you want to spend, take a look at the cxp22's for $150 here: http://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=58.

so i did the complete thing already. i bought a tommasso ninja and upgraded a few things and it got stolen. im on vacation in milwaukee and went to bens and dropped $650 i ended up with the sugino 75. you guys are right about the dp-18s. i still need a stem, seat post, saddle, and wheelsets.

What's wrong with the S-2's looks? I got one for my new build and it's fine. Pretty average but fine. It doesn't jump out at me as being fugly or anything.

I have a cxp22/formula combo on one of my bikes(a shop around here sells 'em for about $100)and it's solid.I used a thomson seatpost on my last build and i'm quite happy with it.

The "messenger" crank with a normal ring is a decent value, if you can live with the chainline. I hate the messenger chain ring, so I just bought the same crank with a traditional looking 48. It was nowhere near the cost of the Omnium (maybe half the price, delivered).

Haha, didn't really mean to but kinda thought so. I gotta adimit I understand - I wouldn't dream of going to B/D for a geared bike. I have no sense of self-consciousness on my TCR with shiny Zipp cranks.

How about when someone on a BD bike zips by you while you're struggling?

+1. Went with the kilo complete, replaced all my points of contact with the bike, upgraded the wheels and I'm stoked. Oh, and had to put a 17 on the rear (Who builds a fixed gear with 48x16?!?). When my drivetrain wears out, I'll cross that bridge when it comes..

That doesn't happen. Most of my riding is on the American River bike trail, since it's 30+ miles of continuous uninterrupted path. It can be a bike show out there and Motobecane or Pinerello doesn't matter - I'm always "on yer left!" :thumb:
