How does this work? isnt it equal to something higher? due to the spacing?

Gearing is all about the diameter of the gears, not the amount of teeth on the sprockets.
The Inch Pitch chain and sprocket combos worked just like the stuff we have today. It was just a different way of doing it.

Yes it is equal to a 12t half inch pitch cog, it is the diameter that determines its ratio

i've seen those cogs on the newer bmx style bikes... right...? but it's alot smaller in diameter...

They got them down to eight tooth and maybe even seven for the flatland crowd. Those sprockets will work with standard 1/8th chains.

actually, the 8t one you're thinking of is inch pitch as well, but yes, it was for flatland.

I'm pretty sure the regular half inch pitch currently on the market is a 9t cog.

Since the thread was about rear cogs I was referring to products like the Profile 8t driver like this one...
